Are those the old Athearn sprung trucks on that Timken box?  I had an EL box car with those back in the very late 60s.  I replaced them because they so different from my other trucks!

I know better now, of course.

Timkin 3
 *  the Lionel Timkin box car . As can be seen the car is yellow with a white stripe. The car was made for Lionel by Athearn. It was aviable in the 1960s. You can see the Lionel L within a circle marking this car as a Lionel one.

As I understand it, Bev-Bel purchased undecorated HO Athearn cars and then did the short runs of the their specially painted cars.

Hi again Alan.
 * Yep your right. Bev bel made the yellow and the red cars. I dont know if the made the silver and blue car. I'll post a photo of it here. The only one I have is a unbuilt Athearn metal car from the 1960s. The third style Timken roller bearing car .

Does anyone know when Bev-Bel started doing production runs of custom paint jobs? I have a whole slew of Bev-Bel Athearn cars and think most of them are from the 70's and 80's. Probably enough to do a whole Bev-Bel thread...

Henry:

It seems to me that Bev-Bel was doing HO cars by the 1980s, and perhaps in the late 1970s.

Didn't they also paint some Bachmann/Lionel GP30 shells in the 1980s?  I don't remember for sure, so I thought I'd throw that out there.

They also did some passenger cars too, using the Athearn undecorated heavyweight cars as their starting point.

What I liked about their cars was being able to get paint schemes that no one else was doing, and still at reasonable prices.

A Bev-Bel/Kar Line thread sounds interersting.

Hi guys ! They also sold those painted GP30 shells as sold ready to run locomotives, less off course mounting details like the hand rails, on Athearn GP35 drives. At train shows don't pick up one of these GP30s by squeezing the body from above. The Bachmann shell fits but doesn't attach to the drive. When you try to pick it up this way, the drive falls out. People who get these and know of this problem and should fix it. There is a fix that works on any diesel kitbashed where the body doesn't attach to the drive.

Now that you mention Bev-Bel GP30s, didn't they mill the corners of the Athearn frame so the carbody would ride on the frame?  Seems to me they had to do something like that to get the body to fit.

* Back in Reply # 14 Is a Mainline Palace Poultry Car. It was finished in brown and yellow. Here is one by a different manufacture. This is done in green and white. Though similar it is Not the same. I have seen it in adds in the model Railroader Magazine. Can't think of who made it. I have it listed as Main-Line but kind of remember it wasn't. If I see it again I will edit in that info.

edit 9-17-2012 :
In a March 1954 Magazine is a add for this car. It is made by " Model Wood Lumber Co. "

Toptrain,
At one time I had an entire freight train set.  Everything may have been individually boxed, but it all came packaged in a larger flat.  This was decorated as Delaware & Hudson with GP38s.  It was all Bachmann.

Yes, Bachmann was around in the '60s.
I believe this set was from the '90s or 2000s.
I put my comment in this thread because of the discussion of Bev-Bel.

* A very old all metal tank car. Built like a Globe or Athearn is this Mobile Gas # SVX 916. Red ball also made cars like this one. I have never found one in a Red Ball box so I don't know if this is one.  This cars and its second car SVX 518 are both marked Globe.

Boy, do those Mantua hook-and-loop couplers bring back memories...

My father used them untill he finally made the switch to Kadee's in the late sixties- after two decades. They were a bear to keep aligned vertically (and it was critical), cranky at best to uncouple, and if one car went over, they all did...

(And that warp in the middle of the zamak walkway on the tank car wasn't rare, even in the fifties.)
