John , not so specialized as you may thing. Made from a gas it wasn't wet or produce water when it melted. Thus, Dry Ice. Frozen carbon dioxide was sold in direct completion with regular ice. Used at outdoor events. Anyone knowing about the problems with Carbon dioxide knows the reason it would fall out of favor, and disappear from view. The stuff I think, was colder than ice.

Sidenote, of sorts? To add to the fun, the "real thing" MATHIESON Cars must have been nasty to work. It needs to be kept in mind there
was little use of "Tow Motor" (TM) (lift trucks) in the context of 1936. Had the platform cargo handling equipment been widely used, Dry Ice
could have been handled much differently and effectively.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forklift_truck

Frank,
That's interesting that they used Dry Ice in standard with regular ice, as it is much colder....I just wonder what happened to the car, or items that were in contact with it as back then, most farmers used it for the obvious thing, Cow and other animal reproduction, but..... that amount wasn't needed I don't believe.....

All this is interesting as that's something you don't see anymore.....

Frank,
INTERESTING you would point out those trucks on this car! Those same trucks were a type that the B&O took on A LOT of their rolling stock! Allied trucks I do believe.....HO models of them, are difficult to find! Have any spares?

Right! On the ATSF Car, it depicts the ALLIED "Full Cushion" truck design. Evidently, on prototype applications, it approved
for high speed service. Recall, the design seen on WWII "Troop Sleeper" Cars.

In the Photo (just above) of a MATHIESON MALX 5027 Car? Hard to believe the trucks used were legal for high speed service.
Probably were not acceptable?

Mathieson 5027 is a all wood reefer from a period of 1900 to 1930. I would guess that those trucks were OK for the start of the period.

John, so far all I found is one of the kits that I started to assemble the trucks on, and removed the set from the Santa Fe Dry ice car. So at the point I have 2 sets of the trucks. one die cast and one plastic. and the gilbert trailing truck.

Gentlemen....here's a source for the express trucks mentioned above for the dry ice cars.

The first picture is a B&O truck and the second an Allied. Both are available from Bethelem Car Works, a link to whose web site is below the photos.
