Georges Creek Railway (GCK) is the contract operator that performs switching for select parts of the Verso Paper Mill at Luke, MD.

They are confined to a small area at the center of the mill complex and switch cars delivered to them by a CSX crew from the WVC Junction Yard at Beryl, WV.

CSX also switches parts of the mill and shuttles boxcars between the mill and the Finish Products Warehouse 5 miles away at Biggs, MD.

GCK presently uses a Alco T6 switch that is stored at the mill. The Interchange area and the location the switch is stored at is very visible from MD Rt. 135 but access and parking is very limited.

The T6 puts on a very good "Alco Smoke Show" doing the movements.

In the area between MD Rt. 135 and the Paper Mill is a 3 track yard and the former WM Thomas sub. CSX will bring the cars over from the former WM / WVC Junction yard and drop cars in Luke, MD for the GCK to switch.

Cars normally handled by the GCK include tanks and covered hoppers of the various coatings applied to the paper during production.

The "Clay Hole" trackage goes off the the left, the trackage off to the right follows along the #8 / #9 paper machine building.

Coming out ...... The large window at the right is the Security Comm Center..... The mill has always had and enforced a very strict No Trespassing position.

Does Georges Creek still have the WM SD35 and SD40?  I had thought they were going to use them to haul coal out of the former Georges Creek subdivision but I don't think that has worked out.

Yes, evidently they still have those engines.  There is a railfan event being conducted on the former Georges Creek subdivision on May 29.  See Trainorders.com for more information.  Evidently the line is operational as far as Midland.  They're not actually loading coal up there are they?

The line is still closed between Barton and the towns of, Lonaconing, Midland and points North due to a couple of wash-outs. The tracks between Westernport and Barton are still very much overgrown but they are working on them....GP #39 , the SD35 and SD40 are still stored in Ridgeley, WV on the WMSR

I'm glad he painted them black rather than the red & white.
