JOHNSBURG -- The state has backed the Saratoga and North Creek Railway’s bid to reopen the Tahawus Line between North Creek and Newcomb.

The railway’s owner, Iowa Pacific Holdings, has been seeking common carrier status for months from the federal Surface Transportation Board. The status would allow the railroad to haul freight from multiple businesses along the line.

The federal board late last year denied the company’s original application after a local environmental group, Protect the Adirondacks, protested, saying the 30-mile line crosses about 13 miles of state forest preserve.

Iowa Pacific appealed the federal board’s denial.

The two state agencies charged with management of forest preserve and travel corridors — the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Transportation — are now on board with the proposal, according to a joint letter filed with the Transportation Board.

“From an environmental perspective, the resumption of the rail line can result in the dramatic reduction of truck traffic in this sensitive area of the Adirondack Park, thereby reducing harmful emissions, lowering the region’s carbon footprint and greatly diminishing dust and noise,” said DOT Deputy Commissioner Stanley Gee and DEC Deputy Commissioner Marc Gerstman in the letter, which was filed Monday.

Iowa Pacific plans to haul tailings — left over from an old mining operation at Tahawus — that are used in industrial manufacturing. The company is also in negotiations with Barton Mines in North River about hauling material from Barton’s garnet mines.

STB has awarded common carrier status for the line, which means the final green light has been given and work to restore service and start trains has been given. No word, however, when restoration will begin.

The operator of the Saratoga & North Creek Railway can move forward with plans to reopen the Tahawus rail line between North Creek and Newcomb and offer freight service, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announced Monday.

The federal Surface Transportation Board on Monday approved a request for “common carrier” status on the line, which allows Iowa Pacific Holdings, the rail line operator, to reopen the line.

It took awhile, but is now a sure thing as Iowa Pacific plans to run the first Saratoga and North Creek Railway train today, August 8 — the first train in about 23 years. This first trip will cover only 5.5 miles of refurbished line, though eventually the carrier will rehab the full 30 mile line in order to service an aggregates customer.

FIRST FREIGHT. The first revenue freight move to cross this bridge since November 1989 rolls SB, operating under the old D&H symbol used for the D&H North Creek to Saratoga job.
