Thanks, Mike. When I first saw this short line almost 4 years ago, it was run down and seemed like it was barely making it. The eastern end of the railroad was out of service, and not much was running. Now, a major crosstie plant is supposed to be breaking ground on line, and recently an inland intermodal terminal has opened up running doublestacks to Cordele from Savannah for transload. Along with the SAM Shortline passenger trains that run from Cordele to Preston making for some interesting action, I'm hoping to spend a little more time trackside this year documenting this "success story".

1/3/13 HOG Cordele local heads west under the 5th St bridge in downtown.

During the ice storms that "crippled" Georgia, I got some time in trackside in Cordele.

First up, a NB NS unit autorack at 9:43

Next up, a SB CSX unit grain train at 9:52. It had rolled up to a stop waiting for the interlocking to time out. Trailing unit is a faded C40-8 #7578.

NS Cordele local G60 shoves north at 10:15 to serve an agricultural customer on a unique branchline in town that is served by CSX on the west and NS on the east, a single track connection.

a NB CSX mixed freight at 10:22. Union Pacific power seemed to dominate the day.

a trailing SD40-2 leaser. I've always liked the widecab SD60's too.

The HOG local, having been held up for over a half hour, finally gets its #8 light across the interlocking westbound at 10:30. As I departed for the day, both NS and CSX had southbounds nearing town. Cordele... never a dull moment.

CSX Q025-21 takes the signal at the Cordele interlocking, while off to the left the HOG SAM Shortline passenger excursion waits for its #6 light.

NS 295 southbound with two BNSF units. This was the 14th of 17 trains through the interlocking in just under 6 hours yesterday.

While I've been trackside a few times since the last post, it's always been on a weekend when the HOG isn't running. Digging through some shots I found back in January they had their ex CN motor on the Cordele local.

You can see the former CN map logo "ghosting" through the paint

Southbound CSX overtakes southbound NS at the Cordele manual interlocking. Whoever shows up first wins!
