The ditch lights were on, so the switching moves were completed.

GWI seems to favor the combination of Geep and 1500 HP switcher on its locals, since I've seen it on both the R&S (seen here) and the B&P this year.

I drove ahead of the train and caught the local as it headed up the former B&O/BR&P on the approach to the Brooks Avenue Yard.

It's nice to see Rail Box (or its successor) still in business in the 21st Century.

The R&S local heads into the Brooks Avenue Yard. I could follow it no further, so this ended my chase for the day.

A Serious Disaster

After many years of successful operation of railway systems in Western Australia and South Australia, Genesee & Wyoming have now encountered a real challenge in the Northern Territory.

Not so long ago they purchased the line from Alice Springs north to Darwin together with the management rights to the line from Alice Springs south to the east-west line at Tarcoola in South Australia.

The real challenges of operating this line have now manifested themselves. A northbound freight, 7AD1, has been partly destroyed crossing the Edith River bridge about 150 miles south of Darwin and 40 miles north of Katherine. The southern embankment approaching the bridge appears to have collapsed under the weight of the train. The bridge is a modern concrete structure and appears to have survived. I believe that the deck is some 30-40 feet above the riverbed. The nearby road bridges carrying the Stuart Highway are also damaged. The highway bridges were underwater during the deluge.

Upstream at Edith River Falls 15.5” of rain were recorded in less than 24 hours. The wall of water coming down the river washed vehicles off of the highway bridges and weakened the rail bridge embankments.  The train was carrying a mixed load of ore wagons, standard containers, and refrigerated containers, the later colloquially known as ‘reefers’. The disaster occurred around 5.00am.

These photos illustrate the situation.

Later that morning a northbound Ghan arrived on time at Katherine with some 200 passengers. A similar load of passengers was waiting in Darwin to make the southbound journey to Adelaide. Until either the rail line or highway is re-opened there is no land communication between Darwin and places north of the disaster with the rest of the country. Only air transport is available. One lane of the 4 lane highway may be re-opened in about 24 hours.  Darwin city will be running out of perishable foods and fuel until a land link is re-established.

December is the beginning of the cyclone season which continues through to April. Between 1878 and 1937 Darwin was devastated by 5 cyclones. The city was largely caught unprepared when the 6th, Cyclone Tracey, hit at midnight on Christmas Eve 1974. The city was literally destroyed. This year a warning was issued 2 days before Christmas that a cyclone was forming in the Arafura Sea. This time they were well prepared. A force 2 cyclone crossed the coast the day after Christmas well east of the city. It became a dense rain depression moving slowly east. This is where the rain came from and which has caused the present problems. The cyclone is now reforming over the Gulf of Carpentaria and will move over northern Queensland, the Cape York region.

Depending on continuing rain and river heights permanent repairs to the rail bridge may not be possible until the end of the wet season. Temporary repairs may also be problematical.

Carrying out any kind of activity, commercial or recreational, in northern Australia requires major efforts. The problems to be faced are many. The climate and terrain are completely unforgiving.

We are about to see the material from which Genesee and Wyoming are made from.

It is worth cycling through this batch of later photographs to see just how much damage nature can inflict in a short space of time.

It is clear the Genesee & Wyoming have a major task in front of them. I would not expect the line to re-open for some months.

Can someone please help me out?  I have an HO layout of the G&W/R&S/CR based in the 1988-1991 timeframe, from when I was a student at RIT.

What were the symbols of the G&W/R&S trains from that era?  Salt/coal/mercandise, really any and all.  Even symbols from a little before or after that time.  Also, not just the symbols, but also the starting and stopping yards.  I'm interested in the symbols on the R&S from south of Silver Springs to Rochester, and the entire original G&W main.

I never used my scanner to chase thrains on these lines, so I never heard their symbols.

Thanks in advance!

Matt ... I have been to Leroy many times and never seen a train there (of course, I wasn't really there to see trains, but anyway ... ) I enjoyed these photos. And also the photos taken at Buffalo Creek Yard. Thanks!

I made another pilgrimage to Buffalo Creek Yard a couple weeks ago. A Buffalo & Pittsburgh SW1500 was working solo that morning.
