Great tour of the M&D! A terrific chronicle of this li'l RR at work. Great to see an RS3 in revenue freight service.

Next time I'm in the Rehoboth area, I'll hafta take a side trip west to Seaford and have a look around.   Maybe I'll have some luck.

True, but I've only ever seen one RS3 on the D-L...and it wasn't hauling anything at the time.  I think it was one of the ex-D&H units if I'm not mistaken.

Here ya go Charlie, NDC 99 hauling covered hoppers. Northampton , PA (sorry I know this is off topic). A lot of railroads use RS3 and RS3m's including MD&DE and NDC, DL, Battenkill, and so on, it's just a matter of hoping they are operating when one visits the railroads...

That sure is one classy looking RS3 they have.

Hey by the way I thought you folks might be interested in seeing one (I believe) of M&D's CF7's before it went to M&D.  In 1998 then Burlington Northern sold a branch line to an independant operator who leased this sucker from NREX for about a year in 1998.

Here is CF7 2632 in south central British Columbia Canada near Fruitvale in 1998.

Hi,

The CF7 in the picture is actually Keokuk Junction #2632, which was previously ATSF #2632.

MDDE's #2632 was formerly Black River and Western #42, previously ATSF #2421.

Note that KJ #2632, like MDDE's #2628 and #2630, has the round cab profile shared by CF7s built from 1969 through 1976 (#2649 down through #2472).  MDDE #2632 has the squared-off cab profile used in 1977 and 1978 (#2471 through #2417).  Many -- most -- rounded roofline CF7s later had their cabs rebuilt to a squared-off profile.  These rebuilt-cab units can be identified from units built originaly with a squared-off cab by having one fewer side window and a one-piece (rather than two-piece) engineer's window.

I'm not sure why MDDE chose to number the CF7s with even numbers in the 2600 range when all their other units are horsepower-based.  #2628 is the original ATSF #2628, but #2630 was renumbered by the railroad -- it was ATSF #2531 (ATSF #2630 was scrapped...).  I would have thought they'd become #1501-#1503.

On another CF7 note, the original CF7, #2649, is long gone, but the second is in lease sevice for Watco and the third is on the Pioneer Valley and was just rebuilt.  The last CF7 is active as Maryland and Pennsylvania/Yorkrail #1500 just a few hours drive from MDDE.
