This may be old news to many, but I just heard about it yesterday.  BBC Channel 4 is airing a five-part television series, called "The Biggest Little Railway In The World."
 
Last summer, Dick Strawbridge assmbled a crew of several dozen builders and tasked them with constructing a rail line across Scotland, from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east.
 
Oh, and they're doing it in G Scale.
 
Apparently, no one has ever constructed a real railroad across that rugged terrain, but that fact has not deterred these folks.  In fact, it is probably what ignited them.
 
The line is seventy-three miles long.  That's seventy-three actual miles.  If the scale is British Gauge One (1:32), that works out to a little over 2,300 scale miles-- about the distance from Chicago to Los Angeles via Omaha, Cheyenne, and Salt Lake City.)
 
The locomotive appears to be steam-powered rather than electric.
 
Videos are scarce at this point, but should become easier to find once the show is broadcast.  Meanwhile, here's an article about the project:
