Mike, GVT is undergoing a system-wide grade crossing improvement phase.  They have done multiple X-ings in Scranton within the past two years.  Those two old ALCos had been in Scranton but from what I understand, they have very little room to store all of their equipment (they're in serious need of a yard).

Sallenparks, from Scranton, you'd want to follow US 6 East (business) through Midvalley to Childs.  Meredith St is the where you'd make a right.  Continue until you see tracks.  The locomotives should a distance up the tracks on the left.  Someone can correct this if I am wrong.

Here's the 2004 excursion at it's destination, Carbondale.

                  John.

I enclosed a topo map of the location of the two locomotives. They are marked with the two yellow diamonds.

GVT has been improving the grade crossings. Right now the crossing at North Valley Aveneue in Olyphant is closed due to them installing the new concrete grade crossing.  I was wondering if they are planning to do anything north or Archbald because the tracks do not look like they are in good condition at all.

I was also on that Steamtown excursion in 2004. I posted several pictures of it on my site.

Anyone know what this is for? it appears to hook up to cars and suck out the contents (perhaps grain?) It apparently hasn't been in use since as far as I know no trains have gone beyond Archbald since Steamtown's 2004 excursion. (which we were on)

On a side note, they are replacing the grade crossing at North Valley Avenue in Olyphant right by my house.

Further north we saw these two sitting on a side track that is very overgrown. I tried to get good shots but the camera kept getting wet. Here is the first one.

This was a neat find, this appears to be an old Delaware & Hudson caboose on a side track protected by a gate. It would be great to see this restored!

Along the way we found this drainage duct. above it we saw remains of ties and the base of a water tower. After the growth dies off we plan to check this out further.

The loco on the left had been attached to the head end of the train in the previous picture, but they dropped it off. This is a local I am assuming since I saw it several times today.

Nice shots NS. I'm suprised that the train had trouble with the 3643 and 3642 at the head end and pushers. The should have hooked up the new DL 3000, they would have definetly made it. Although this picture isn't of an engine on the Pocono main, I thought it would be nice to post a picture of RDG RS-1 in the South Scranton yard.

D-L In South Scranton.... - By x600 on 07/06/04 at 16:13:31 - 'DL4103.jpg' 91 KB
I just wanted to make a few comments on what I saw on a recent trip to Scranton and how it struck me in particular. I had the chance to visit home for a few weeks last month for a wedding and other family outings. One of the days I managed to slip away and take a ride to the old neighborhood in Southside. Some people travel in their same footsteps their entire life, others rarely pass by the places they have been before. I'm one of the latter. It's often a real treat to stand somewhere where I was a long time ago, looking at the places with different eyes.
Spending the first 13 or so years of my youth along the tracks between Cherry St and Breck St have left a lasting impression and is no doubt part responsible for my interest in trains. Returning to that area, I am suprized and pleased that, although the D&H Penn Div. main is no more, the old neighborhood is AWASH in Old ALCOs!!!!
The loading dock track at the old A&P warehouse was lined up with an assortment of stuff that would cause any ALCO-holic to drool! and the shop tracks were likewise full of stuff that would be the envy of any rail museum!
Some businesses can go about their daily routine pursuing profit and not making much of a difference, but then GVT has chose to do it's work with the highest of style and class. Not only preserving and using rare equipment, but doing it with that little extra that only shows to those that pay attention. The historic and also stylish paint schemes show the effort that is put in to not just running a regional railroad, but doing it with the pride and knowledge of the past as a hallmark.
I was sitting in Moscow, when a freight went rumbling through town on it's way back to Scranton. The folks I was with did'nt even blink or notice that, not only was freight being moved over a line built before the civil war, but was being pulled by machines that are close to the last of their kind.
I just felt the need to pass my thoughts along to the people that make the effort and to others to take notice.
GVT is a class act.
To see Alco RS3s in "D&H" on the same tracks that I saw their long gone siblings heading for the hills over 40 years ago, shows that my old stompin' grounds are in good hands.
Well Done!!

Here's one of it moving cars around the yard. It's interesting that all they did was shuffle the order of the cars and then put them back in the same place. Sorta like a model railroad no particular reason switch move BTW the Boxcars are Delaware Lackawanna! and note they're under trolley wire! Weird stuff goin' on in Scranton these days!

Delaware-Lackawanna #2461 - By Jeff_K. on 06/28/04 at 11:15:38 - 'DL2641Scranton.jpg' 174 KB
Hello everyone,
This is a shot taken on Sunday, June 7, 2004 at Steamtown/Scranton, PA  of the D-L #2461 under a dark cloudy sky. Does anyone know the model number of this loco and its heritage? It looks to me like some sort of Ex-CP C424? Also, it was resting along with the 3642, 645, and another ex-Mohawk Adirondack and Northern loco which is behind the #2461. (I don't much about the D-L as you can tell. Hopefully I can learn more. )

Take Care.
