The return trip offered a better look at the switching/layover power at Eastside... this GP40-2 is on home rails, as it was originally B&O #4292. Her mate seems to have been converted to a road slug.

And that's all for the tour!

Slightly to the north is the PRR Grays Ferry swing bridge that connected the railroad's main (on the west bank of the river) to the Belt Line trackage along the Delaware River via Washington Ave.  (Some may still remember street running along Washington Ave.)  The bridge today stands frozen in the open position.

Philly: Bartram Gardens & River Tour - By Charlie_O on 07/14/07 at 17:29:04 - 'BartramGardens_Skyline.jpg' 129 KB
Perhaps some of you already know about this, but I recently discovered that the estate of Colonial-era botanist John Bartram (tucked along the western shore of the Schuylkill River in the city's Kingsessing neighborhood) not only provides a great view of the B&O's bridge into Eastside Yard, but also offers riverboat tours to the Art Museum and back.

If you're not put off by the badlands surrounding this landmark estate, it's a great place to relax...and railfan.

Today took the family on a river tour that gave us a close-up look at some of the area's RR structures.

A few samples follow...  first, the Philly skyline.  CSX's Eastside yard is at right center.

This year I got a picture of one of their two track mobiles as well, although it wasn't running.

Thats all the news from Renovo this year. We asked a lady at an ice cream shop how often trains came through and all she could tell us was about 2 a day.

I took a ride into Lansdale today to blow off some steam. Except that there aren't any steam engines in Lansdale. But, I was treated to something quite different. For the first time, I saw CSX Local #B738, using the SD40-2's AND the GP38's! That's two unit on each end. I'm not sure why they did it, but it was cool!

It's been two or three years since I walked around the old shops at Renovo.  Are they working on freight cars there now?  I know that there had been a plan to reopen the shop for repair work awhile back, but hadn't heard anything further.  What's the name of the company?  Do they have a small trackmobile, or does NS provide the switching?

The place was deserted the last time I was there, except for an immense rattlesnake which had been recently killed along the entrance road to the shops.  I walked through the whole place; it was fascinating.

That caboose appears to be a New Haven.  I wonder if its a leftover from the old caboose restoration operation that was there in the 1980s?

Keith

Keith,
Yes there is currently a car restoration shop here. I would say there is probably 50 cars there at the moment. The BCIT and YIRR seem to be sending all there cars for restorations lately, because I have seen them at 2 restoration shops in the past 2 weeks. The name of the company is in the picture below, Renovo Railroad Industries, LLC. They have a small trackmobile, but unfortunatly I don't have a picture.

It's been a good 2 weeks since this thread had some activity. Well, I got some stuff to share. In recient weeks, Lansdale has had 3 new units. GP40-2 #6000, and two SD40-2's- #8879 and #8820, all CSX. Anywho, I got out of school at 10:00AM this morning, and headed over to Lansdale. This time, I was able to catch the B738 leaving the yard instead of entering it. I got pics and LINK URL , of my first encouter with the 6000. 6000 is bacisally a nicer version of the 6114. Now for the good part: the pics!

This first one is at the North end of the Lansdale yards. The 6000 was doing some switch when I arrived. I could hear that engine reving up from a quarter-of-a-mile away!

Renovo, PA - By RN_addict on 06/11/06 at 20:57:43 - 'IMG_1953_1_1.jpg' 468 KB
I was camping this weekend in Potter County and paid 2 visits to this little town. A sign proclaims it to be the "Home of the Pennsylvania Railroad" or something of that nature. It looks like there was a station, large yard, and a large number of shop buildings at one point. The yard is long gone and the station is falling down, but the shops are used for railcar repair it looks like. They have a railroad preservation organization and I found 2 old Pennsy cars tucked away on a siding in the "Heritage Park". Does anybody know more about the railroad inside the town itself? What railroad runs through here now? It seems to be a shortline, but the only one I can think of that is around there is Tioga Central.

Also, in the state forest around the cabin where I was staying there used to be a logging railroad. My cabin was built immediately next to the road bed. I walked on it a little bit and you can feel that the ties are still in the ground but the rails are long gone. Trees have grown on it and it looks to be abandoned for around 100 years now. Can anybody tell me more about this? The picture attached is a picture of the roadbed. It is hard to tell it is an old roadbed if you arent there in person. Thanks for any help in advance!

I had a great Memorial Day. Trains, the pool, and good-looking girls! What more could a guy ask for? Anyway, I went to Lansdale for a Rita's Misto Shake, and to catch a train or two.

Here's the first train that pulled in, before I went to get my Misto Shake. This engineer and I had a nice chat. He really laid on the horn, as you can hear in this LINK URL . In the video, you'll also hear me slurping up the rest of the delicious Misto Shake. Also, for a weekend, I didn't see a single 2-car train, which is common on a weekend.
