Found CSX #8484 on train H773-07 working at Lee Hall, VA. The temp had gotten to a balmy 20 degrees F with a wind chill that was not in the single digits, so why not. 1/7/14 at 1230Hrs.

It took me a while but I did snag some shots of a working SD40-2 last week. NS #3202 was the power for local freight H42 at Buffalo Creek Junction.

I caught this one tucked into an eastbound CSX intermodal freight a few days ago:

Found NS #3578 working near Portlock Yard in Norfolk, VA. Obviously NS has not given up on the SD40-2. They are getting 80 of them from Helm Leasing. To the causal observer, this may look like a tagger got a hold of it. Looks to me like NS is so power short they have the attitude "if it runs, use it!" I guess they will get around to getting it in basic black some time. BOLO for NS #3528, it was BN #7149, the LNG test unit with the flared radiators.

The word on the street is that NS has been experiencing high failure rates on the road, and needed quick fill in power to replace the engines out of service. I was told this "Krylon paint job" was being applied to the new arrivals, now we have proof! Good catch!

HAL road power rests for the daily run to Albany in the Hilton, GA yard.

What is the tale on the passenger car in the background?

Haven't seen any SD40-2 around here in some time, though the yard set is generally a pair of leased (HCLX currently) GP-40-2s.

The HLCX GP-40-2s I see in the yard here in the Pine Curtain country are maroon with white lettering instead of blue. Suppose it depened on who was offering cheap paint whn the locomotives went in for a company paint job..

I ran across NS 3528 teamed up with a GE, switching the Owego & Harford in Owego, NY on August 1.  Lettering on the cab says "SD40-2."  In spite of LNG engine and flared radiators, if they say it's an SD40, I guess it is.

Regarding power shortage, earlier in the day I photographed a westbound NS empty coal train, pulled by CN/UP/BNSF lashup.
