SD40-2s in 2013

Well, it's the 41st year of life for the surviving SD40-2s... and the 47th anniversary of the original SD40. Some of them are still out there running in 2013. My first sighting was a high nose NS SD40-2 parked on the Ithaca Secondary with an MOW train.

Apparently, she started life as a Southern unit... but #3263 looked right at home on former LV/EC&N iron.

Both photos in this post were taken by me Saturday 1/19/2013 Spencer, NY.

Another goodie... a standard cab NS SD40-2 led the charge through the snow at CP Cass in mid-winter:

Photo taken by me Saturday 1/26/2013 in Hornell, NY. The train is westbound 309.

Yes - entire existence of NS, but that ain't that long in the scheme of things. When I started being interested in trains, there was Norfolk & Western and Southern, and Wabash and L&N and - none of them went to Buffalo. That was the territory of the Erie and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western and NYC, eh? And of course, no NS. Or SCL. Or BNSF. And we still had the AT&SF (and GC&SF), CB&Q, FW&D, CRI&P (and CRI&G). Etc.

Wabash had been coming to Buffalo over 50 years ago and N&W since '64 after gobbling up WAB and NKP.

It should also be noted that N&W power operated on EL during the Dereco era (and even occasionally afterward). Also, N&W/NKP power was pooled on the Apollo/Mercury trains which ran on LV and D&H rails. Seeing NS power in upstate NY isn't strange to me at all.

True! Precisely correct, it ran DET - Windsor (ON) - NIA FLS/ Fort Erie (ON) - BUF over trackage rights agreement thru Ontario.

Compare, NKP presence on all US routing, CGO - CLE - BUF.

SIGH! I was there, and clearly recall all this! <G>

Although CSX gets a lot of "ribbing" for some aspects of its operations, I will give them major kudos for putting a pair of SD40-2s on the point of  train recently. This eastbound freight was heading through the Attridge Road crossing/Chili Junction on a nice evening a few weeks ago.

well, if i may be that guy, there was a Norfolk & Southern prior to 1982, it just never went anywhere near New York. And it was gobbled up by Southern in 1974.

The colors may changed from 35 years ago, but these SD40-2s seem right at home in a former Conrail (now NS) yard.

There are quite a few SD40-2s scattered around the Grand Elk network. I think there's one in Grand Rapids. The rest are in Kalamazoo for the 302s down to Elkhart and back (60+ cars!)
