What are the differences between a 645C2R and the 645E3?  Not a trivia question, I am really interested.

Thanks.

The 645C2R was the engine specified just for the BL20-2's.  The BL20-2's were to be made from "recycled" GP7's/GP9's using as many reworked parts of the old locomotives as possible, mainly to keep costs down.  The engine in the old GP's was a 16-567C.  What was done, was to utilize the 16-567C block but put in 645E power assemblies.  Not a bad idea, but one that over time has shown the higher pressures of the higher rated PA's have caused some problems in the 567C block which was not designed to handle the higher horsepower output (1750 vs. 2000).  The 645C2R also runs at a lower rpm (804 in throttle 8 ) than a GP9 (835 in throttle 8 ), but the added hp still takes its toll.

What was it the engines said? Well, UP 119 called the Central Pacific Jupiter a western snob and Jupiter made fun of 119's midwester accent.

my favorite locomotives are end cab switchers. especially alco and emd although all standard width track units are ok. to me switching is where the action is. on the main line here they come and there they go but the switcher is usually always busy doing somethng and you can hear them under load doing what they do best.

I now have a question? What was it? Sometime in the late 80's or perhaps 90 or 91 aswitcher unit showed up at a scrap yard near the now defunct copperweld steel co. It was puled to the diesel shop and evaluated as a possible working unit. From the appearance it looked to be a small Alco about 70 tons with a cooper-bessemer 600hp.diesel. The cab roof was round like a S-series the trucks were slab cut like GE The stack was the same as the 70 ton GE. The radiators were on the sides like Alco and the unit was painted with a dark green, no stripes or letters or numbers, no builders plate. The paint was in good condition and the unit was clean as if kept inside. Strangely the entire brake rigging had been torch cut rendering the unit useless. The diesel shop removed the prime mover for use as a spare for the GE units on the premises Any ideas?

if i had to pick, and it had to be only deisels, i'd say

1.C-44-9
2.SD-24
3.SD-45
4. GP-7
5. GP-15

i like the short locos, or the massive ridiculesly large ones.  the only reason the sd45 and 24 is in there cause i left room for em,

ok, i tried to count up all the votes, and you guys drove me out of my mind.  thier must be a hundred votes in the whole thing. there where 73 specific types of deisel locmotives. (sry, the E60CP is an electric, but i love that one too!)

overall most popular locomotive is:
EMD GP-9!  (which ironicly was voted for 9 times)

as for first generation locos, their was alot going around about baldwins, but almost no one gave a specific loco, so the first 3 are:
1. EMD GP-9 (9votes
2. EMD E8/9(5 votes)
3. Tie: Baldwin RF16, EMD GP-7, EMD F7A(4 votes)

2nd generation goes as:
1. EMD SD40-2(8 votes)
2. EMD SD45 (6 votes)
3. Tie: EMD GP30, EMD GP38(4 votes)

SD-45 should have won, i think!

3rd generation:
1. GE C44-9W(6 votes)
2. EMD SD80MAC (5 votes)
3. Tie: GE AC4400CW, EMD SD70(4 votes)

why did i waste one hour doing this? 3 reasons: 1. i fell for a girl, and they drive guys insane. 2.its so hot that the heat is messing with my brain. 3.  I was insane to start with!

 My least favorite diesel:SD70.
Why?Because it looks out of proportion,I could live with an SDP70
then because It would look better.

The lines and look of the standard cab diesels are my favorite, starting with the EMDs from the GP9 to the SD70, the GE Dash 8s and the few NS Dash 9s also come to mind, engines with the high short hood adds to that beauty!

It's official - My 5 year old likes High Hoods and Long Hoods forward!!! Like Father like son! I love the GP series but I hold the GP7 in the no.1 spot because I'm a Lackawanna/EL fan. Anything High Hood is cool with me...

There you go...anything in Chessie or CSX!

That'll get my vote each time!

Honestly, There is something about how the GE Universals wore the Chessie era paint that really made them stand out
