On 5/27/17 I found this view in Roanoke, VA. While the #3288 & #3220 have new cabs, they are still working. The caboose is a "no charge" extra to the photo.

While not a true GP30, it is a Road Slug now, it still looks the part. CSX #2320 waits a call to service in Richmond, VA.

Well, they are still out there. Some are more modified then others, but they still pull good and sound great. NS #3524 is crossing the Dan River southbound at Danville, VA on 1/6/17 at 1158Hrs. Speculation is the original Southern signals won't last long. The proof hides in the background.

This last photo shows the rear window arrangement. Sure wish I could have gotten closer but I wasn't about to risk trespassing, even for the sake of a mystery diesel switcher!

Again, any info about this unit would be greatly appreciated.

This is photo 2, showing the close-up of the cab area. You _may_ be able to make out the letters and numbers behind the cab. Note the plastic buckets covering the exhaust stacks.

Calgon Corporation diesel switcher - By WVa_Jon on 12/31/16 at 19:33:32 - '001.jpg' 81 KB
I would like to "ask the audience", so to speak, about a mystery switcher parked near Calgon Corporation's plant near Catlettsburg, KY. Way back in the early 60's, Dad was one of the accountants at "Pittsburgh Activated Carbon" as it was called in those days (that's Dad's story and I'm stickin' to it).

This past Thanksgiving week, I drove by there just to see what, if any, rail traffic was going on the former C&O line from Ashland/Catlettsburg itself, heading towards Louisa and points south. I did see a few covered hoppers, and snagged photos of them, but heading back to the main road I saw this locomotive. The hood looks like an EMD NW-2, with the "step" in the hood near the cab, but the frame looks thicker, to me, than standard EMD's and the cab looks like a Baldwin-style cab.

Here is the first of four pictures, with this one showing a broadside view of the engineer's side. I don't have the reporting marks (maybe PCC?) or the unit number (maybe 099?). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Caught a train in Manassas, VA with 4 units on it. The first 3 were SD40-2s, 2 NS rebuilds with Admiral Cabs and one ex-leaser with the original cab. I'm not sure about the 4th unit, can't seem to find it in the Diesel Spotters Guides I have.

Check the history on CSX 8484: started working as PRR SD45 6234, went to PC and CR, then sold to C&NW as 6557.  It was rebuilt by M-K and sold to CSX as an SD40-2.

Here's another one with a history: CSX 8459, rebuilt by M-K from MP SD40 747.  Notice the yellow beacon above the cab window; looks like radio-control.

General Electric U23B - By CHESSIEMIKE on 03/19/16 at 20:44:41 - 'Vulcan_Materials_2779_U23B_small.jpg' 112 KB
I happened to be in the Jessup, MD area the other day and found Ex-Conrail #2779, a U23B
working in the Vulcan Materials Co. Annapolis Junction Distribution Yard. I first saw this unit at this location on 10/19/96. It was Wimpey Minerals then and I don't think they had had the unit very long at that time. Almost 20 years in the same location. I think it started life as Lehigh Valley #503.

The 12 cylinder 710G3 engine put out 3000HP and has 3 microprocessors in the electrical cabinet. Here we find one, NS #4625, switching the plant at West Point, VA on 9/22/15 at 1350Hrs. But have a look at the engineer's window.  The 2 windows have been "merged" together.  Is this an Alaska RR only design, or are there other RR's using this window design.  Is this design a forerunner to the standard 2 piece windows now used in EMD and GE units?

I saw my first one yesterday. Why doesn't EMD call it an SD70DCe?

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but what does GEVO stahd for? I caught a pair of brand new BNSF ES44AC's, where they contrasted with the ancient semaphores at Brighton Park, IL.

Better hope that thing's articulated, at least in the middle.  Passenger car length is 85 feet.
I'm not sure, you decide.
From the drawing it looks like it would have been a C-C-C+C-C.

The only F7s that I know of that went to Austrailia were from Western Pacific.

The photograph is of one of the two Western Pacific locomotives sent to Newman Mining. It was taken in 1970 and shows 5451 attached to an Alco 636. I can confirm that one of these locomotives is preserved as a static exhibit by BHP Iron at Port Hedland.

There were many beautiful schemes that came out of the EMD Styling Department...this is my favorite. It looked just great on the E8s and even on the big FM Trainmasters!

The ALCO-GE and EMD MRS-1 were each developed by their respective builders. ALCO-GE had nothing to do with designing the EMD MRS-1. The below photo was taken about a week before I left Alaska in January 1978.  This photo is also on John Combs' Alaska Railroad page at LINK URL .
