Here's an over-all view of the layout. The track is glued down and drying! Tomorrow everything gets painted...(yes, that's my mustang in the background :p)

Here's the progress so far. I've glued the foam board sheets 2 thick for extra support (remember it has to be light, yet sturdy, because it will make several trips between the table inside and the shelf in the garage). I've also dug the swamp/stream area.

Fictional DT&I - By Young_Rider on 06/11/06 at 19:25:02 - 'NewDTImap.jpg' 131 KB
Hi Gang. Some friends of mine have invited me to join in their fictional world of model railroading. Basically, one has the New York Central as a surving railroad, and they operate all of what CSX now operates. The other has the Santa Fe as it would have been if the SP-SF merger would have happened.

My part of this whole thing is going to be the DT&I. I'm going to have the DT&I taking over the Grand Trunk, as well as buying the B&O route from Parkersburg to Cincinnati. They'll have trackage rights into Cumberland and St. Louis. Further down the road, the DT&I will acquire the Midland Sub from CSX, as well as the line from Lima to Ft.Wayne, and on to Chicago (just like the I&O and CF&E). CN will have rights outlined, and the DT&I will have rights on CN in turn, to Buffalo, NY. I've attached a map...I'm sure you all can figure it out.

Basically I'm after information...mainly dates. I want to create a timeline of events of the DT&I. Any information on the following would be greatly appreciated.

DT&I/GTW Merger (In my world, the DT&I Survives)
I&O Purchase/lease of the CSX Midland Sub
CF&E Created
CSX Filing for Abandonment of the Parkersburg-Cincy Line
CSX Filing for Abandonment of the B&O line from WCH to Mussleman

Thanks in advance...I will keep you all updated on how this is going...this should be a lot of fun!

Re: Welcome to my Fictional DT&I layout! - By Young_Rider on 04/16/06 at 05:54:19 - 'Layout.jpg' 97 KB
So after a lot of thought and planning and input, this is what I've come up with. It's a 4.5x9 foot layout using 3 corner and 3 straight modules from woodland scenics. That way I get one free module out of the deal, and all the scenery in one shot. I just found out they've release pre-drilled stands for these as well. This should be a fairly quick and easy project! The basic idea is an oval. Around approx. half of the layout is a high traffic mainline (mostly for looks). The oval uses part of the main line, and part of a branch line to make the loop. This will allow me to include a lot of different aspects in the layout, as well as things like signals and interchanges, and the 90-degree crossing at one corner. This plan is loosely based on one done in MR a few years ago. The layout is divided diagonally in half with a backdrop. I will be including a coal loader on one side, and an engine service facility, grain elevator, depot, and interchange on the other. I also plan to spend a great deal of time on the water feature. Tell me what you think!

DT&I bridges - By DRAWHEAD on 03/14/06 at 19:16:24 - 'img305.jpg' 23 KB
Is there any other large river crossings on the old DT&I other than the one down at Glen Jean by Waverly? I'm a engineer for NS and run on the line that crosses the river at Glen Jean and i cross the river there every trip.I have alway's noticed the old concrete piers in the river from the DT&I off to the far side of our bridge. You can also see a few scarce remains of a few of the wood pilings from the old wooden trestle approach over in the tree line on the north/west side of the river.I have also noticed some steel truss remains of the main bridge lying down in the water at a angle up against the last concrete pier on the south/east side of the river wich one can see when the water is low in the summer.I recently bough this old photo postcard on Ebay wich has wrote on the back DT&I RR bridge with loaded cars on bridge when water was high, wich i presume the photo to be from around the 1913 flood as the photo is a early teens photo.I thought it was of the old DT&I bridge at Glen Jean as it kinda resembled the general area of the bridge crossing on the south/east side since flood debri was to the right of the bridge in the photo.I thought maybe the N&W/NS  bridge would have been to the far left of the actual picture. After looking more closely i can see a house or farm on the far left bank wich does not fit that area on that side of the river at Glen Jean.I now believe this is another bridge on the DT&I somewhere else? Anybody know of anywhere else on the DT&I RR that had a pretty wide river crossing like in the photo? As for the 6 gun toting gent's in the picture it doesn't list any names or actual location of the picture.Thank's!

Ironton Bridge - By rail1a on 03/01/06 at 09:48:31 - 'bridge1a.jpg' 248 KB
As I was heading up the old DT&I from Ironton (2/26/2006), I came across the first bridge out of town crossing Storms Creek and the last major bridge still standing between Ironton and Bloom Junction.  I took note of it becuase I fear it will not last the spring rains and these may be some of the last pictures of it still standing.  Natures forces have been attacking it and there is not much left holding it up.  One thing I do not understand is that with most of all the other bridges removed, why this on was left standing?

This shot is looking east and you can see the detached peir on the south end.

As the conductor gets off the tend the switch, we decide to leave the 4085 and her crew to their duties.

So while the DT&I as a company is only a memory, their former rails still do feel the weight of trains.

Enjoy...

The DT&I trackage on the east side of Ottawa, known as the "Ottawa Loop" is no race track...here we see the 4085 slowly moving south.

[25]

Re: Action on the former DT&I... - By CG_Tower on 02/20/06 at 19:53:40 - 'io4085klemansmall.jpg' 94 KB
After their work was done at Leipsic, the 4085 and her crew proceeded south to Ottawa, Ohio. The crew had two cars to drop off at a small industry located on the former DT&I "Ottawa Loop" track...now used as a long passing siding and access to two industries.

Here we see the 4085 leaving CSX rails and getting back onto the DT&I at Kleman.

Here we see the 4085 coming out of the siding and drifting by the new "semaphore" distant signal. This signal shows only yellow and is used to warn crews as they approach the NS diamonds at Leipsic.

Action on the former DT&I... - By CG_Tower on 02/20/06 at 19:49:33 - 'ioleipsic.jpg' 83 KB
We were up in Leipsic, Ohio on Sunday (2/19/06) and caught I&O 4085 with a few cars. This is on the former DT&I main line, just north of XN Jct. where the line joins the CSX (former B&O) for the run to DT&I Jct. on Lima's north side.

Here we see the 4085 dropping off some covered hoppers in the passing track.

Re: Welcome to my Fictional DT&I layout! - By Young_Rider on 01/09/06 at 01:42:18 - 'Station.jpg' 65 KB
Well, the holidays are over, and so is the remodeling on our house here in Las Vegas. With that, out come the trains, of course! I have no idea when I'll again be able to build a layout, but this is proving to be a lot of fun in the mean time. I had to buy a roll of green felt to deaden the sound on our new hardwood floors, but it looks pretty good with the trains. I've also been using sheets of thick fiber, used to prevent scratches on floors from furniture, as ground cover, and as anchors for trees and bushes. Take a look!

Here's the station and speeder shed (which still needs weathered). For some odd reason, the woodland scenics station sort of reminds me of the Jackson Depot. *shrugs*

If anyone knows how to slow down that GP9 to run with my GP38, PLEASE let me know. It runs like 3 times as fast as the GP38! Haha!

Action on the former DT&I - By CG_Tower on 11/21/04 at 22:17:12 - 'cfwe3880leipsic.jpg' 82 KB
Since the postings have been slow recently, I offer the following photo of an I&O train on former DT&I tracks at Leipsic, Ohio.

While the "International Orange" is gone, it sure is nice to see something with a presentable paint scheme polishing the rails.

Anybody need any used ties? Summer 1985. The sand tower and silver floodlight poles still stand in 2004. I haven't checked to see if the inspection pit is filled in.

Jackson depot in 1984.......just a few months after the last train.

See that blue 1984 Monte Carlo in the background? My parents bought it new in Jan. 1984, and I continued to love it and drive it into early 1997, when I finally parted with it.

The last regular, daily train prepares to depart Jackson on Saturday morning, May 15, 1982.

After this date, service to Jackson was cut to just one train per week, usually arriving on Wednesday, going to Pedro on the Ironton branch, then switching the shops and local customers, on Thursday, and returning to Springfield on Friday. Service on the Ironton branch ended in early June 1982, then the train would arrive on Weds. and leave on Thurs. Sometimes they would skip a week! That made for a long two weeks between trains!

The last unit, 213, was the last unit stationed at Jackson for the yard job and Ironton branch. Only one unit was needed to handle both jobs after the GT takeover in late 1980, becaused they reduced both jobs to only three days per week, alternately Mon.-Sat.

GP-35 #355 was painted into GT colors, with the new DT&I logo applied, at the Jackson Shops in the Spring of 1981.

Here we see the yard job pushing it (along with a string of repaired rolling stock) back from the shops, past the depot, in late April 1981.

I couldn't get the whole car...there was a large ditch behind me, so I couldn't move any further back. So here's the other end.
