D&H for sale

http://www.bloomberg.com this morning that CP intends to sell the D&H:

Quote:
Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) plans to more than double profit in four years as Chief Executive Officer Hunter Harrison seeks to improve efficiency by running longer and faster trains at Canadaís second-largest railroad.

Canadian Pacific has an agreement to sell its Delaware & Hudson Railway, Harrison said yesterday. He didnít elaborate and said he wasnít at liberty to disclose the buyer.

Although I've discounted rumors about the sale of the D&H in the past, this appears to be the real deal. Norfolk Southern hasn't commented yet, but they would be the logical choice since they have most of the traffic on the D&H south of Albany. Owning the D&H would also give NS a direct connection to Pan Am (and the New England market) without any trackage rights.

This is a strange "full circle" situation, since NS sold off the D&H in 1982.

I've read the same statement.  I wonder if the sale also will include the trackage north of Albany which would give NS a direct competition with CSX's St. Lawrence sub.  Of course, we are assuming that NS would be the buyer but maybe a certain large shortline conglomerate might emerge as a bidder.

NS owns a 40-45% stake in NYSW, so I doubt the latter would bid. On the other hand, GWI might take a stab at bidding on the D&H.

You're reading my mind with your latter reference.  You are right, IMO, no way is the NYSW a possible player in this.

The D&H seems to always be an unwanted stepchild since the Guilford sell off. Hopefully this will mean it will now be an important part of another system.
