First Encounter with a Personal Favorite - By chessie8212 on 10/02/06 at 17:26:36 - 'METX_137.jpg' 199 KB
Spent the weekend in Chicago a couple weeks ago.  I've always loved F40's and have wished that I would have been able to see them leading Amtrak trains.  I've been alive long enough to be able to do that, but not always interested in driving to locations to see them, something I wish I would have done now that they are all gone.

Anyway, I've been to Chicago four times now, but never stayed in the suburbs.  I always stayed in downtown and always had limited time, so I never really got to check out Metra.  Well, I was able to this time and finally got to see some F40's in person.  Was thoroughly pleased!

Here's a couple photos from Elmhurst.

Re: Milwaukee Area rail viewing? - By TrainMan404 on 08/05/05 at 13:05:54 - 'Olympian1.jpg' 377 KB
Hey There,
Long time, no post for this forum!  Ok, so I am aware of some information.  Try googleing "Duplainville."  This is a small un-incorperated town near Pewaukee with a diamond crossing of Soo Line and CN.  The Empire Builder passes through here and about 40 trains per day.
Also try going down to the train station in Downtown.  Head East on the one-way in front of the station and turn right at the first light.  You will see a dual-track drawbridge and the curving mainline.  After crossing the tracks, turn left immediately into a gravel lot adjacent to the tracks.  There are often fishermen and they're usually friendly.  Hope this helps!

This view shows freight cars passing through an adjacent tunnel. It also gives a good view of the overhead trolley wiring.

Chicago's Freight Tunnels - By hudsonelectric on 02/21/04 at 10:07:43 - 'Chicago_Freight_Tunnel_1907.jpg' 29 KB
I'm currently researching the freight tunnels with the help of an excellent softcover book entitled 'Forty Feet Below'. Does anyone have info that they'd like to share? Wesites, books, or photos? Here are a couple of postcard views from my collection, circa 1907.

Re: CB&Q branch line question (Aurora area) - By mdeming on 10/27/03 at 23:23:54 - 'cbq_depot.jpg' 158 KB
The CB&Q branch connected to the C&NW in West Chicago. I believe it is abandoned as General Mills in West Chicago no longer uses rail traffic. The attached is a photo of the old depot in West Chicago, It was on Wood Street.

Driver killed in collision with Metra train - By BNSF_1088 on 06/26/03 at 14:35:31 - 'olianimation-2.gif' 41 KB
Driver killed in collision with Metra train
MAYWOOD, Ill. -- A man was killed at a Maywood railroad crossing Tuesday afternoon (June 24) when the car he was driving was struck by a westbound Metra commuter train, according to his report that appeared in the Chicago Tribune.
Police did not release the victim's name.

Police for Maywood and Metra are investigating reports of motorists going around crossing gates to get around an eastbound freight train that was either moving slowly or was stopped on the tracks. The man's car was struck by the westbound commuter train, which was traveling rapidly.

The crash at 9th Avenue and the Metra Union Pacific West line occurred at 1:12 p.m.

Crossing gates and flashing lights were operating at the time of the accident, a Metra spokesman said.

Railroad traffic was delayed for about two hours.
