Today at Cass: Veteran Cass Scenic Railroad engineer Gary Cassell eases Heisler #6 up to the door of the Cass locomotive shop for a minor repair job. It was a sort of sad day for me as Gary will be leaving Cass this coming Thursday.

Re: Cass Scenic Railroad Photos - By PVMRR76 on 05/28/07 at 22:26:16 - '11Screen.jpg' 204 KB
Glad you are enjoying the photos. I have never attended a railfan event or charter-yet- and challenge myself to find interesting photos during everyday operations. Most tourist  railroads have plenty of great photo opportunities waiting to be found by the observant photographer.

At Cass the tourist trains are run the exact way the Mower Lumber Co. handled the log trains. The engine was kept on the downhill side to prevent runaway log cars in case of an uncoupling. Plus, the hand brakes were used instead of the air brakes- just like the tourist trains today.
Railfan weekend photos are nice because the engines are in front, but that was not the way things really happened on the mountains of West Virginia.

Here is a shot of one of CSRR's many fine employees hooking the cinder screen onto #11's stack in preparation for the first train of the season.

Re: Cass Scenic Railroad Photos - By PVMRR76 on 05/28/07 at 09:10:21 - '11-Heisler.jpg' 224 KB
A fairly rare sight- meeting Heisler #6 at the switch back as she labors upgrade with the afternoon Whittaker train.

They added a day trip caboose at the last minute and placed it behind the engine.

BTW- the Heisler has the LOUDEST exhaust I have ever heard! According to a couple of the train crew that is one of the reasons CSRR doesn't usually use her on regular trains. We could hear her exhaust over the noise of #11's safety valve popping off.

Re: Cass Scenic Railroad Photos - By PVMRR76 on 05/28/07 at 09:02:17 - 'BaldView.jpg' 107 KB
If you only ride to Whittaker and back, you miss one of the most spectacular mountain views in the Eastern USA. Even with the typical summer haze- Bald Knob has a spectacular view.

[16]

Re: Cass Scenic Railroad Photos - By PVMRR76 on 05/28/07 at 08:59:52 - 'DBLCaboose.jpg' 265 KB
Caboose #311 will stay at Bald Knob for a couple days as a rental, the second caboose is a day trip rental.

Re: Cass Scenic Railroad Photos - By PVMRR76 on 05/28/07 at 08:57:29 - '2-11to_Bald.jpg' 202 KB
Saturday May 26th, was another beautiful day. Doubleheaded Shays #2 and #11 pushed six cars and two cabooses up the mountain to Bald Knob.

Re: Cass Scenic Railroad Photos - By PVMRR76 on 05/28/07 at 08:46:54 - '11caboose.jpg' 215 KB
#11 brings the first regular train - the 11:00 to Spruce- toward the station, passing one of the day trip cabooses.
#11 no longer wears the ultra loud Reading whistle- she has a very loud Crosby this year.

I certainly hope Cass keeps the enclosed cars at the middle of the train. One of the BEST things at Cass is riding in the open car right in front of the hard working engines. It is a wise move for Cass to accommodate those patrons who can't hack the extreme weather and temperature change from Cass to Bald knob-let's just hope they never enclose most of the train.

Long live the open sided cars.

**Bill G**

I rode the first regular train of the 2007 season Friday May 25th. The once a week run to Spruce.

Guess where they put the new enclosed "Leatherbark Creek" car...

Check the photo- right in front of the engine!! Nuts. Saturday they added an open car in front of the engines for the Bald Knob run.

Hey Walter,

I'm pretty sure I must have seen you trackside a few times when I was riding the train.  Those are some outstanding photos you have there!  I loved them all!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are my photos from the weekend...

First let me start out by saying that it was my first time to Cass and I can say that it was beyond impressive.  If there's a steam fan who has not been than you're missing out bigtime.  Real layed back operation (my cup of tea) and the crew is lively, friendly, and real railroaders, not a bunch of businessmen.

After taking a great ride on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, my father and I picked up Mike Spooler (Spooler734) and Trevor Labor (Allegany Fireball) and headed for Cass.  We first arrived at about 7:30am with nothing but fog to be seen.  When the train pulled into the depot it sounded and looked like a ghost from the past.

And my final shot for now.  Just a little further donw the WM. Very nice scenery out here.  The Cheat Mountain Salamander also uses this route and sometimes they meet at Spruce. I have also ridden the Salamander from Cheat Bridge all the way to Spruce and The Big Cut!!  I encourage anyone who visits Cass to ride the Cheat Mountain Salamander.  Very nice ride.  Now if we could get WMSRR 2-8-0 #734 to pull an excursion over the route.  Boy would that be amazing!!

This little Shanty on the old Western Maryland has the title as the only surviving structure at Spruce.  Hope it can keep that title for years to come.

Feather River Shay Number 11 puts the Caboose in the clear to pull the train by it and use it as the lead car on the Bald Knob run.  Somebody has rented it and will stay at Bald Knob until the next day.

Now the reason I like to go on the fourth is because the Bald Knob train is usually double headed.  And now the 11 runs there 2 is usually the helper. But this fourth of July number 2 didnt go along.  There werent enough people to warrant a longer train. Here is the magnificant Pacific Coast Shay number 2.

Yeah, there is something magical about steam.  And I think number 3s presence at Durbin is just what the town needed. I mean, the scenery is great and hearing that Whistle echo off of West Virginias Endless moutains is something that every steam fan should experience.

One more I promise.  Just a little steam as we depart from the Water stop. Its hard to beleive that in the 70s the C&O let Reading 2102 run down these very tracks to Durbin and turn on the wye at Durbin.  From the looks of things now its so hard to beleive that such a big steamer was there.  haha

Re: Bald Knob Excursion Trains - By PVMRR76 on 01/30/07 at 18:41:48 - 'CASS2CUTOFF_copy-2.jpg' 138 KB
I rode the Bald Knob train in early July and again in September. #11 was the usual Bald Knob engine for all of 2006, as it is the second most powerful locomotive on the Cass roster. They doublehead any train to the knob of six or more cars- usually the Saturday train has two engines. The helper engine is "cut off" on the fly about a mile from the summit after the heavy grade and the train continues with a single engine. This was the practice way back in 1981 on my first visit too.

This photo from September, shows Shay #2  stopping to pick up her fireman (who walked the running board up to the drawbeam to pull the uncoupling lever) while #11's fireman waives goodbye.

Might as well throw in this shot looking down on Old Spruce. The Cheat Mountain Salamander runs on the tracks at left center, along with the weekly Cass train to Spruce.

Thanks again for the kind words about the Cass photos.
Here is one I forgot to post earlier. The man and child standing by Western Maryland #6 really show how big she is.

On a related note.
When I rode behind #6 in July she had a noticable "gait" to her exhaust.
In September it was even more pronounced. Kind of like chug CHUG chug then a brief pause before repeating. In some videos of #6 from a few years back the exhausts were more even, like the other Shays. I wonder if she was getting to need some valve or timing work.

Since the engine crews also perform most of the repairs in the shop, finding someone working on the shop tour is fairly rare. This craftsman is machining a part on the mill.
