There was another oddity up, too, but couldn't locate it right away. In it, we were getting three red lamps. In it, the "Stop" indication lit.
Then, too, in the "Restrictive" (display on the angle), one red also displayed. Thought that indication usually in amber. Why it displayed

Sad about the CPLs, the B&O used to send smaller obsolete materials to the B&O Museum and sell it off.  Of course with the legal environment CSXT would probably be responsible it someone bought a CPL and got hurt.

Q317-02 CSXT 276 (4 units 105 cars) cleared off the OR Sub at Huntington around 1300 today.  Q316-06 CSXT 7910 & 3136 (2 units 67 cars) came on the OR a short time later.  No Q316 out yesterday due to the heavy rain/snow Wednesday/Thursday.  Have not heard if there will be a Q316-07 or just skip to 08 tomorrow.

A first for me in a long time, a full day of railfanning on the CSX Fitzgerald Sub. CSX has leased FEC power and one of the first shots of the day with a brand new zoom lens yields a six pack of power returning empty hoppers northbound caught here at North Ross Siding in Cordele, GA. Three FEC units on the lead, more to follow soon.

BB may have confused the symbol or power may have gotten switched to a Q314.  They did run a Q316-07 later on Saturday with 5326 as leader.  They met Q317-03 7655 at Lakin (MP BN164).  E728-01 46 also came east late on Saturday.  Sunday had Q316-08 5420 (2 units 76 cars) and Q317-04 206 on the OR. Today's lineup was Q317-05 877 west, Q316-09 7776 east, and T840-09 934 east.

Do the Q314/Q315 operate only between Cumberland and Grafton or do they ever run west to/from Brooklyn Junction or Parkersburg?

My understanding is that Q314/Q315 run only between Grafton and Cumberland. Typically Q315 is all loaded Sand Cars going west. They typically run 3 times a week. The Q314 on the 9th. was a heavy mix of freight cars...

With the new operating plan CSXT seems to have left the lid off the train symbol box and some escaped.

Thanks...

I could tell from the scanner traffic that the 1st attempt on the mountain may not go well.

The Engineer on the Rail-Train had serious doubt especially when he was told he had to stop at Bloomington to pick up the Unloading Crew. He wasn't sure he could re-start on the grade but he was over-rode and they took off with just the slug set and a SD50-2.

At that point I took a vacation day from work to follow the action......

There is a narrow yard between the Roll paper warehouse and Rt. 135 were CSX will drop the cars for GCR to switch. All of these photos were taken from the shoulder of Rt/ 135 and didn't involve trespassing on Verso property.

The B770 job not only brings the cars to Luke, MD for the GCR to switch, the job also is responsible for handling the inbound & outbound cars to and from WVC Junction yard and the CSX Keyser, WV yard. Here B770 is eastbound with a cut of outbound cars heading for Keyser.

It's not hard to catch them working, the hard part is getting a good angle on them when they do work. I have never seen the GCR come east past the derail that protects the former WM main from the mill trackage so that kind of limits the area of photo opportunity.

One could get better photo angles from the rear parking lot of the Administration building but the Mill has always had a No Photography Policy on their property. It's just easier for me to shoot what I can from alongside the public highway.

This gives you an idea as to the trackage within the Luke Mill. The drawing is a little dated ... The WM office no longer exists and a couple of the mill yard tracks have been removed.

Figuring U878 was just another coal drag and that Q314 would stop at Keyser to pick up the outbound cars, I went into town to run a couple of errands.... BOY WAS I WRONG... Dispatch switched Q314 over to #1 track and cut them loose at the same time U878 went eastbound on #2 track... The result by the time I got to Dawson both trains were side x side running and I had no time to get a proper set-up shot - 9 April 2015

In the early hours of April 15th. Train 317 derailed 11 cars near Springlick Road in Garrett County, MD on 17-mile Grade. No Injuries and No Haz-Mat release were reported. The location is a very inaccessible location on the mountain. Besides the headend power, the train also had a Helper crew on the rear.

RJ Corman handled the clean-up and Track #1 was reopened early the next to limited traffic.

With the derailment on 17-Mile Grade stopping east and west traffic out of Grafton, there was still plenty of action in and around Keyser.

While the power would lead you to believe this could be Q316, in fact it's B770-15 with the outbound cars from WVC Junction. Two (2) heavy AC units were left at the junction from a eastbound Thomas Sub train and the switcher crew brought them into West Keyser. - 15 April 2015

During the derailment clean-up, most train movements took place at night. By the 17th. train patterns began to return to normal. The only differences was that westbound trains had to stop in West Keyser to switch from track #1 to track #2.

Shortly after leaving West Keyser, I get a text that a Black unit with 2 hoppers passed a friends house and are westbound coming towards Keyser.

It typically takes a train about 25 - 30 minutes to reach Dawson from my friends house in Bowling Green. I head for Dawson and start picking up D063 calling signals coming west. I was figuring on one of the ex. NS 4-axle leasers leading.......... BUT... Surprise!  - 17 April 2015

Wow, small world. I caught the same train near Cumberland, MD.
More recently (5/7/15 at 1807Hrs) I found CSX #3088, a ES44AH leading on train K965-06 at CA20 on the Peninsula Sub. This train is also known as the Rock Runner and he is pulling empties from Basic Construction.

Q317-14 westbound at 21st. Bridge Road - 14 May 2015
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 16th, 2015, 9:16am
U878-14 waits at 21st. Bridge Road for the taxi to bring their Conductor back to the train.

Typically the eastbound drags that pick up additional 40 cars in Keyser do so by pulling their power down thru the east yard from West Keyser and backing the loads to their train at West Keyser.

If some reason the additional cars have to be pulled out of the east yard and their train is made up on the eastbound siding, then the CO has to restore the switches and derail near the keyser Station while the engineer takes the train clear of the crossings in Keyser. The taxi will then take to CO over to 21st. Bridge Road to rejoin his train - 15 May 2015

Ping Pong Pellet Car and Musical Locomotives at West Keyser - 27 May 2015

It starts out with B772-27 coming into West Keyser to drop their outbound cars on the Freight Track.
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 29th, 2015, 6:30pm
While B772-27 is dropping their outbound cars, Q317-27 arrives in West Keyser to drop a string of inbound cars for the WVC Junction.

317 will soon become a player in the musical locomotives and the Covered hopper in the far left of the photo will make at least 10 moves without leaving the west yard #2 track - 27 May 2015
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 29th, 2015, 6:34pm
B772-27 takes their GP40-2 into the East Yard while Q317 does their work.

After 317 departs, B772will cross over both mains into the West Yard to pick up the covered hopper to take east to the Keyser Industrial Park - 27 May 2015
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 29th, 2015, 6:40pm
B772-27 has the Covered Hopper coupled up and is sitting in the west yard waiting for clearance to come out of the yard and go east to the Industrial park....... but a Track Inspector has #2 main tied up and with the clock ticking the Train Master decides to have the B770 crew come down from the WVC Junction yard to pick up the inbound cars.

So, with no other power available at the Junction, B772 drops the covered hopper and puts the GP40-2 on the head end of the freight and garbs the #3166 from the Mt. Storm Helpers for their work in the park.

Now with the #3166 and the Covered Hopper, the B772 crew tries to leave the west yard for a second time.... - 27 May 2015
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 29th, 2015, 6:44pm
Not so fast.... Dispatcher reports that he has a problem on the mountain and needs the west facing unit that B772 has. Seems Q317 needs a new leader and a crew has been called to take the 3166 up the mountain to meet Q317....

So the B772 crew drops the covered hopper for a second time and reaches back in to grab the east facing Mt. Storm Helper for the park work - 27 May 2015
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 29th, 2015, 6:46pm
Now using the #3109, B772-27 has coupled to the Covered Hopper for a third time and attempts to head east to work the Keyser Industrial Park - 27 May 2015
Posted by: YeOldeEnjine Posted on: May 29th, 2015, 6:49pm
Success..... B772-27 using the #3109 shoves east thru Keyser, WV heading for the Industrial Park.

As was told to me, Lower initial purchase cost and lower maintenance costs are the reason for the Hi-Ad Trucks instead of the Radials.

Now what makes it interesting on the Mountain Sub Division is that non-radial truck units are prohibited from the Thomas and Stoney trackage... meaning that anything going to the Mt. Storm power station has to be Radial equipped.... not that a couple of non-radials got there by mistake, but that's another story!

A normally quiet Thursday evening was broken when we overheard the Dispatcher giving E705-16 trackage rights to run westbound on #2 track and to watch ahead for Q317-18 ahead on #1 track...... then we heard the engine number given... CP #8772..... Time to beat feet trackside.

In the mean time text messages started being received that E705 had a pair of CP ES44AC for power and no CSX units.....

Wow, YeOldeEnjine......very impressive photos. I have never before been down to that neck of the woods, but saw a video from many years ago from "Iron Horse" on the West End. That kind of whetted my appetite for this line. I even remember the same symbols being used (Q-316 and 317).

I also enjoyed the shots of the Western Maryland painted units. Nice work!

I was out for a short-bit this past Monday (6/29) and sat near the Pixley Road crossing in the Town of Gates, just west of Rochester.

After a half-hour wait, I saw the newly-installed Darth Vader automatic signals light-up for a westbound on Track-1 (northern-most). I got out and grabbed my camera, after a couple minutes the empty-autorack train appeared.

In the distance, you can see the old concrete NYC milepost (376) to the right.

Posted by: Charlie Ricker Posted on: Jul 4th, 2015, 9:34pm
In the going-away view, you can see the new Darth Vader signals. Clear-board for this WB on track-1 and track-2 is reading "approach-limited" (yellow over flashing-green), likely for an impending westbound to cross-over to track-1 at the next interlocking west (near milepost 380).

On the other side of the signals is the old signal-bridge that carried the old automatic signals from the days of the New York Central. Those old-relics have been slowly being replaced by the newer signals.

Well, as you may know CSX has been receiving crude oil trains from the BNSF and taking them to Yorktown, VA (among other places) for unloading. One came in a few days ago with BNSF #4139 leading. So, when I saw BNSF #4139, 3 other units, a spacer car and a line of tank cars, I thought "empties west" of course. Here they are crossing Jefferson Ave coming off the Amoco Branch today around 1340Hrs. Forgive the quality, all I had was my cell phone.

Imagine my surprise later in the day (1645Hrs) when I see the Local, AKA H773-29, eastbound at CA23 with BNSF #4139, 3 CSX units, a spacer car, and a line of tank cars. I guess this falls in my ever growing "wrong again" category.

Caught the Track Geometry Train out on the Amoco Branch off the Peninsula Subdivision. CSX train ID W001-08 is at the end of the Amoco Branch with CSX #6025, a GP40-2, CSX #994364 Power Car Columbus, and CSX #994302 TGC2. CSX #2573, a GP38-2 on the local, H773-08, was working out that way and you can see him in the background.

Is it any wonder we have disagreements over historical information? When was this locomotive (CSX #655) built? GE can't decide if it was August or October 1999.
