CSX Blocked Through Baltimore

A retaining wall collapsed along the CSX main through Baltimore on 4/30. It is north of the Howard Street Tunnel where the line swings due east for Philly. The line runs through a long cut for about 15 blocks under numerous bridges. 26th street collapsed onto the tracks, taking several parked vehicles with it. It is a miracle no one was hurt. I myself park there to go one of my favorite restaurants nearby. The collapse was between Charles and St. Paul Streets. There were no homes on the railroad side of the street. They have to move gingerly for now as any further collapse could imperil homes on the other side of the street.

Well to recall, the first construction of this segment of B & O Line dates to 1880 - 1890 decades.

Reported elsewhere that CSX is hoping to resume some operations through the area sometime tonight.  So far, only the Tropicana consist has been detoured through Hagerstown.

Should also point out that CSX put several hoppers on the ground down in Prince Georges County MD this AM.  Looks like a roadbed washout not unlike what happened in Lynchburg yesterday.

Local News Reports that CSX had first move, a heavy Eastbound, running thru the Baltimore (26th St) site at 0530 HR Today, FR 2 MAY.
Quick on site work. Stated line out of service for about thirty-six (36) hours!

Now the blame game starts between the City, CSX, and To Whom It May Concern. Local residents have been wary of the embankment,
at least since 1998. The locals seem to be better Civil Engineers than those who checked integrity on behalf of the City...

It really could have been worse....there is a school just across St. Paul Street from the collapse. The collapse happened about 5:00 PM, about two hours after dismissal.
