Ballast train B016-18 working at CA28.5 on the Peninsula Sub. Wish I had had the time to watch them drop some of that Ballast. CSX #2480 is a SD50-2 that came from Conrail. 6/18/14 at 1247Hrs.

Had these come back through on Wednesday after taking a sulfur train to Richmond Monday night.

Canadian National 2030, ex-UP 9053, leads CN 2861 west as it brings bare table train X115 west through town.

Shot these up on the New River Sub while spending mine and the nation's birthday on Friday.  Standing at Claremont, we awaited the arrival of a westbound grain empty to come off of the single track. Here we see Union Pacific EMD SD70M 4645 rolling west under the former C&O cantilever at Claremont as it leads empty grain train V899 west towards Russell, Kentucky.

After catching the UP leader on the empty grain train. It was back to Thurmond to wait on Amtrak to come in for its stop. Here we see #50, the eastbound Cardinal, passing under the signal with the old coaling tower and Main Street.

After grabbing a bite to eat at Hinton and watching a coal train snake its way up the Greenbrier Valley past Wiggins only to be held at Hilldale. After watching the coal train come by us at Wiggins. It was off to Brooks to await the westbound that had held the coal train up at Hilldale. After a quick in and out at Hinton for a crew change. Westbound crude empty K081 is seen passing under the automatic signals at Brooks as it makes its way along the New River Subdivision.

Nice shots! Almost all the old C&O signals are now gone out my way. I sent you this K081-06 yesterday. Here he is passing through Grove, AKA CA32, a little after 1800Hrs. He was on the heels of an empty hopper train. BNSF #9326, a SD70ACe leads BNSF #7458, an ES44DC and BNSF #6000, an ES44AC.

Missed that one by a half an hour. Went by as I was leaving work to come home.

Per a friend of mine, there are three more eastbound oil trains heading our way.

Beautiful shots.......love how you have incorporated the old C&O signals and masts into them. I'm sure they on borrowed-time---glad these shots will help keep them alive.

Charlie,

Most of those old C&O signals are now gone down my way and I sure miss them. Another one will soon fall. The replacements are almost in at CA25 on the Peninsula Sub as you can see from this shot of E505-11, empties west pulled by CSX locomotives #436, a CW44AC and CSX #674, a CW60AC.

They snuck a couple of NS units on K080-12. the view is looking west at the CA25 signal. The new signals stand to the side for now, but I have to wonder if they will last as long as the ones they are replacing and what will replace them. In the distance you can see the signals at Lee Hall, VA.

Nice photos of the signal bridges, Mike. Same type of scenarios up here in NY State with CSX doing the same thing with signals. Many masts are already up with the heads turned to the side--the ex NYC signal bridges are still in service next to them, but not for much longer!

And nice photos as well, "YeOldEnjine!"

Q025-26 hits the Cordele interlocking on a horribly muggy hot south Georgia day. I had planned on a whole day trackside, but due to the humidity I only waited on 3 trains before departing.

A building on the southeast corner of the interlocking was demolished recently making this shot possible now

I don't get trackside much these days but when I saw a westbound mixed freight tied down at 58th Street in Philly, I couldn't resist.

CSX 3170 (GE ES44AC)
2nd unit unknown (possibly CSX 7359)
CSX 754 (EMD SD70MAC)
CEFX 3119 (EMD SD40M-2) "Bluebird" / b. 1966 as an SD45 for SP

Some days, the most interesting person you meet is a river with a train running beside it.
