A fellow in our morning coffee group stated that "a train can't go into Canada without a teapot, it's a law", he then said that "they  (CP, SOO) keep buying teapots". He usually misrepresents facts so I thought I would check this one out to see how far off he is this time. Thanks, Steve, Camden Place, MN (North Minneapolis).

It's not law, it's part of the collective agreement for Canadian crews.

Well this is news to me, most of the rail workersm(C.P.) are all coffee drinkers.  Seems strange to have this written into a collective agreement but mind you I have seen some strange agreements.  One thing I can tell you it is not a Canadian Law.

On CP, all locomotives leading in Canada must be equipped with a hotplate, refrigerator and kettle. On CN, as per the collective agreements all locomotives leading in Canada are required to have a hotplate, microwave oven, refrigerator and a coffee pot.

So what happens when a CP locomotive is crewed by a CN crew?

Nothing happens, there were some issues when the Co-pro first started but an agreement was reached.
