I'd like to start this thread over again. I'll be posting shots taken on the Cranbrook and Crowsnest subdivisions, and generally any territory that is part of the Lethbridge and Cranbrook divisions. If anyone has any shots from this region, please post!

I'll start from a train I chased a couple of weeks ago; likely a 966-01, a ballast train. This first shot was taken as the train passes the west mileboard for Cowley. The bridge over the tracks is highway 3.

The next shot is of the same train rocketing downgrade approaching SNS Pincher. In about a minute, the second unit, an old 9000, will conk out.

During the same day, a train which normally sets out and returns with sulphur loads is seen returning to Lethbridge light on the Pecten Subdivision. This train will follow the ballast loads into Kipp.

The next series of photos were taken on the Cranbrook subdivision. When I arrived, Crowsnest was empty so I continued on to Sparwood. I heard a southbound off of the Fording River sub recieving a Clearance westward just after they had passed the scanner at mile 5.3. I rushed down to the crossing at Finning and waited as the train used the crossover to get off of the River track.

The first shot is after the train met an empty grain at Hosmer. No stopping here today as a foreman has restored the west switch for them.

The Fording train was originally supposed to meet two trains at Caithness, but they were both slow getting out of Cranbrook and Fort Steele so the westbound got cleared to the next siding, Colvalli. The train is seen climbing through Jaffray at mile 67.25.

The two eastbounds (one grain empty and one coal empty, respectively) had not yet arrived when I pulled off of the highway. By the time I reached the siding and crossing at Colvalli, the eastbound empty grain had already met the coal load and was pulling out at the east siding switch. The road from hell to Colvalli ate up a lot of time. The second eastbound was around Wardner. Here we see the second eastbound rolling to a stop at the east switch, waiting for a track release off of the empty grain. The westbound 'C' or tail end remote visible on the left, has just reported the west siding switch normal to the RTC and is departing.

Both trains had a straight shot to Crowsnest/Sparwood, only the stop being a switch restore at Hosmer. At around the same time the Cranbrook crew was tieing down the 374-520 empties, a 469-15 pulled into the yard which consisted of mostly empty wellcars. I didn't get any pictures of either train at Crowsnest, as the clouds had moved in preventing any good photos.

The next photo is from last week. I got off work when I noticed an eastbound passing through Pincher. I grabbed my camera and headed east where three westbounds were approaching Chokio. The first of the westbounds was light power headed up to Pecten to bring down a sulphur load which had been abandoned by the previous crew. The remote kept dumping air and as a result no brakes could be setup. The other two westbounds would be meeting the eastbound at Chokio. When I arrived, the first westbound was just powering up after restoring the west switch. This photo shows the eastbound waiting on the second train which is still about 15 minutes out.

That's all for now. Again, if you've got photos from this area, post em!

8296 brings a short (3600 foot) but heavy 2469-31 upgrade approaching the east siding switch Burmis.

This shot was taken two years ago at the east end of Crowsnest. The grain load pictured here stalled on the 2.2% at Frank. After doubling the train at Chinook the Lethbridge crew had lost about 2.5 hours running time. Here, the Lethbridge crew has changed off with Cranbrook at the crossing and are pulling the train off of the Crowsnest subdivision.

This photo was taken sometime last Spring. A grain empty (likely 338 ) is pulling into the siding at Burmis near mile 79.90 to meet its counterpart, 387. Just as the train was clearing the west siding switch, a kicker triggered a MASSIVE run-in.

A long and very heavy 469 creeps across the 507 at about 2MPH. The lead unit, 8817 has suffered a traction motor blower failure and the unit has been cut back to 1000HP. The train will occupy the crossing for about 35 minutes.

Taken about a year ago, a 673 with all UP power slows for a restore at the west siding switch Hosmer.

MANY thanks to ALL for posting FANTASTIC photographs!!!!

Question: In this area and in the rest of Southern Alberta, is it possible to find locals and wayfreights with older power? Is so, where and when? Thanks!

I heard something about the mill at Scookumchuk requiring non AC-traction units for switching purposes.....
When does the 3-4 SD-40-2(f) powered train to/from Trail come through the 'Nest?

There are a few out of Cranbrook; the North/South wayfreight, and the McConnel Turn use old power. The only ones that Lethbridge hosts would be the turn out to Dunmore and the various grain lifters that run south to the border. There would also be some that work Lethbridge as there is a fair bit of industry track in Lethbridge.

EDIT: Aside from locals and turns, the 966/965 (Herzog loads/empties) use three older units almost always. I did however catch it once with two of CP's own POS SD90s.

After meeting a 468 at Elko, the engineer has stopped the train and the conductor steps outside to restore the west siding switch.

8268 and two other units struggle to lift grain loads through Cowley. The cars in the background on the siding are a stored aluminum coal set. These have since been repositioned somewhere else due to problems arising as to the next available siding being 20 miles away in the east, and 10 miles in the west.
