Nearing the end of a hard life, these two old veterans showed they could still bring a train into Broadview from the West.  This pic was taken in the 80's when a scene such as this was becoming harder to find on the CP mainline.  A fellow that worked for CP in the "motive power" department told me that they tried to wring a few more miles out of units like this hauling coal out of the Estevan area, but they were just too far gone.  Sad, isn't it?  I'll keep adding to this topic.

Okay, No.1.  Let 'er go!!  VIA No. 1 leaving the station at Broadview, westbound.  It seems that the lead unit isn't contributing much to the ruckus.  Man, did that ever send chills up my spine!!  (Edited: On a second look, there is a nice cloud just ahead of the second unit's offering, so the lead unit is likely working too.  kj)

The first of the 3000 hp SD40's, the pride of the CP fleet.  If she's still around, she'll be an "old hand" now.

5500 is supposedly on its way to the Revelstoke railway museum...all the other non -2's are gone.

What years do your photos cover? That one of the Canadian must be in late 83/84(or poss later), as those are CN units...

missthealcos:  Most of these pics are from the very early 80's to around 1990.  I have hundreds of pics of the CP and VIA power.  I am posting some of the better ones so people who didn't have the chance to see, hear, smell and feel these engines at work can at least see them through my eyes.  I like to look at the pics of older power from other roads that I would never been able to see otherwise.  I lived just under two miles north of the CP mainline and could hear the old 567's barking away.  Must have been something when the UP would have up to ten units at the head end.  One of the nicest treats I ever heard was No.1 and No. 2 making a meet after dark on a hot summer night, then both heading away, 567's full throttle.  As good as any symphony, anywhere!!

Trailing unit on a slow freight east into Broadview.  The power on this train consisted of a GP9 and this B-unit.  This was in the 1980's, mainline CP Rail.

At one time, I cussed the SD40's because they were pushing all my old F's and Geep's out to pasture.  Now this vintage SD is probably a goner too.

This was taken at the Broadview, SK yard in better days, probably on a Sunday morning as No.2 waits to roll east.  1424 is likely cheap Chinese sidegrinders and the 5518 has likely gone the same way.

VIA No. 1 westbound out of Broadview, SK on a nice summer evening, trailing an old "smoker" behind.  This pic is a modeller's dream, with the road dirt along the bottom.  Nothin' nicer than a good old 567 barking it's way out of town.  They wouldn't be gone too far out and they would be up to 75 miles an hour and more!!

Always wonderful pictures Kjohn!

1424 rests today in Riverside park in Medicine Hat, along with 1418, both in their original block paint schemes. They were placed there in 1985. The plaque in front of them states they had travelled over 7 million miles by retirement.

5518 was sold in 2000, and became part of the GCFX lease fleet as 3085

1410(and the rest of the remaining 1400/1900's) were sold back to CP by Via for parts in 1983, with the FP9's and F9B's donating their 567C blocks to the TH&B GP7's when they were rebuilt to 1600's in 87/88. The F-units were all scrapped in or about 1988(other than 1418-1424, which were donated by CP, not Via) 1409 in Cranbrook is the only surviving CP FP9A.

Trailing an old Geep, with an SD40 in the lead, the 4721 rests up for a run west out of the Broadview yard on a nice sunny day.

Running very late, VIA No.2 heads east past the elevator track at Broadview.  Three classic F's, all sporting the "CP" winterization hatches.  1980's railroading at its best - at least in my eyes!!
