Good shots, odd that they're still running the old covered wagons while SD's sit idled...

Those "covered wagons" aren't old.  They were built in 1988.  They are SD40-2F's.  I love the "mean" look about them.  Now that the old SD40-2's are thinning out, I see these 9000's a lot more.  I rode in one while the boys were making up a train.

Those deadline pics are making me cry, Kjohn.

Those are the engines that symbolize true CP railroading for me.
The tonal throb of SD-40's pulling coal drags through the Selkirks and Rockies is what crystalized railfanning for me.

GE's are nice and big, but they have no character.

Thankyou ever so much for taking all those pictures.

CPRail4744:  I know how you feel.  I was lucky to have caught the last of the First Generation diesels on the CP mainline.  Power would sometimes be all 567's, working their guts out to keep trains moving.  One time, I heard and saw two 4700's pulling a grain train through my home town (Grenfell).  They sounded like a couple of huge helicopters.

Nothing beats the sound of good old EMD's, whether turbo'd or not.  When I lived at Rose Valley, SK, I got to watch GP38-2 power pull grain and freight right past my back yard.  Sometimes there would be four of them on a really long grain train pulling south.  They were working hard, hard, hard.  Great show.  I always made a point of going out on the back step and waving at the crew.  They would be watching for me.

Now we are watching the slow but sure fading away of the old, original SD40 and -2 locomotives, just like the old GP's and F's.  Some will survive as rebuilds, but most will be melted down.  Just yesterday, I caught a nice old GP9 powering a track evaluation train.  Chopped nose, but still a grand looking old machine.  The 8200's are nearly all gone.

Couldn't agree more...just got back from driving to and from Calgary...It's just not the same anymore. The GE's have no soul. Then I watched 2 DVD's I purchased at the show, well done amateur shots from early 80's to very early 1990...Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I must do something with all the video I shot in the early 90's!

On a good not though, the "deadline" Kjohn shot at Pasqua..these are stored serviceable, mostly Moose Jaw assigned units. Many of them will probably run again. I don't think the 8200 GP9's are going anywhere too soon, only 1, 8236, has been retired as far as I know(if you don't count 8202, retired many years ago) from being wrecked. A few are stored, but I think they will come back. The 1500-1600 switchers though, if anyone can convince CP that hybrid works, they will be history. Already slowly going.

They just mostly all congregate out east. 8204 is In Golden.

I never "hated" or ignored the SD40's..even though I knew they had pushed aside the real interesting stuff..but they were always real Locomotives, and symbolized CP, just like a D10 or a Selkirk did. I think I have photographed a GE maybe twice...and the old adage of what is new today is rare tomorrow, Don't think this will ever apply to an AC4400!

I'm just glad I was there to see to gold old days!

Can anyone tell us what this is?  The poor old girl was banging pretty hard on one cylinder, it seemed.  Plus she was smoking blue.  But she was still doing her work.  The lead engine was the 5615, St. L&H?? or....

They stopped at Grenfell, SK, shunted a few cars, and headed east again.
