Today's 30J rumbles east through Port Kennedy PA with a pair of AC4400CW's for power.

NS and CP jointly operate a daily transfer between Bison Yard and Mohawk Yard. Here we see it headed eastbound, approaching CP Cass in Hornell, NY:

Photo taken by me Saturday 8/23/2008. CP locomotives are the normal power  for this train.

Two smart looking old engines pull a short train eastbound out of Grenfell, SK, on the CP main.   They sounded so nice, just a roaring as they went by.  There were two GE's trying to hide in a little bush just east of there, waiting to pull a huge long train out on to the main.

Ahem....hilarious. I saw that very train, with 5725 and the 2 GP38-2's, the same day, Just east of Swit Current..and thought to myself "gee, wonder if KJohn is out here and saw that".

Way too many GE's out here now...I DID however stumble across an all SD40-2 powered westbound at Gull Lake(6017 leading) the same day, and today, STL&H 5651 was trailing on another westbound near Moosomin.

Broadview sure has changed, even the elevator is gone now.

KJohn, tell me, what happened to the highway rest area that was just West of Wolseley? Did th highway twinning consume it?

missthealcos:  Yes, the rest stop disappeared with the twinning.  You are right about the GE's.  I can hear them coming from a long ways off, the chugging prime mover.  They also put out a high pitched whine when they are pulling or pushing hard at speed.  Is that gears or....?

A high pitched whine sounds more like dynamic brakes to me, are you sure they are pulling kjohn?

Here is a shot of mine taken at Kipp yard over on the shop tracks near Lethbridge, Alberta; SD40-2, SD60, and two SD90macs.

5500 at Revelstoke September 25, 2008.  Hopefully she will be getting a sprucing up and put over at the museum.

That is the plan.  It will be painted in it's original scheme of Tuscan & Grey and put on display at Revelstoke Rail Museum.

Mark, it's a different type of whine. It's more like a turbo-whine and it seems to only occur when the engine is at very high RPM.

I have a video of both the turbo-whine and the DB whine of a GE but unfortunately it's to large to be hosted anywhere.

Here's one from a derailment last May. Apparently a sulfur train (cant remember the number) was coming out of track one at Crowsnest when the power derail apparently tripped itself, tossing a few cars onto the ground. Unfortunately it was also the demise of the power derail itself. I was about FIVE minutes late or I would have saw this thing actually come off of the track. When I got there the conductor was walking back and they thought they had just had a knuckle, but that sure wasn't the case...

I know its a terrible picture but I didn't want to get too close as the crew was probably stressed out enough.

Watched these four different GMD's pull loads away eastbound out of Grenfell, SK on Oct. 2, 2008.  Nice show of growling, howling GM's.  The 3052 looked sharp.  Single pics follow.

I'll throw in some from the Southern Corridor.

On one of the coldest nights of the year, a 269 passes SNS Pincher located at mile 61 Crowsnest Subdivision. Pincher is the second steepest westbound grade on the Crowsnest sub, second only to Frank.

The quality of the pics are terrible but that's the tradeoff for a 300kb limit.
