Baltos post in the Okanagan thread with the pic of the "MLW industries" plate on the control stand of 3550, and the lament of wishing this was still common got me digging through pictures..April 25, 1994 at St. Luc in Montreal...only one non-MLW in this view, but it's an F-unit, so we'll allow it I spent hours wandering around there that day, soaking up the sights and 251 sounds..lucky I had a Video camera as well! The shop people I talked to at the time figured they could keep them running forever...4 years later it was all over.

Here's one from Kjohns neck of the woods.....Kemnay Manitoba, July 29, 1994....Freshly rebuilt SD40 5506, M630 4555, M636 4740, and a long train of 40 ft grain boxes, all running out their last miles. ..only 5506 had much life left to live. 4555 was retired within weeks of this. Despite their reputation and even a request to the engineer while waiting for a meet before I took this to "Notch them out" to get some enourmous black clouds of smoke, those MLWs stacks stayed pretty clear, but it sure sounded good!

lol, I'm glad I inspired you to find these old pictures. The one of the shops sure does look like the grand days of MLW..... and one F-unit   . I wish those days were back  . But at least I was able to find one old MLW, even if it was a CN  .

It was the tail end for the "Big Ms"...part of the reason the pilgrimage to Montreal had to be made..it was right in the middle of the time CP had retired them all "for good"(if you've never read the accounts, they actually had a ceremony in which Rob Ritchie, president and CEO at the time, shut the last one down(4706) to end the "checkered" to say the least, era.)....then had a major power shortage, and Ressurected anything that would run...but it only lasted a year before they were gone.

I may be wrong, but I believe 3550 in Kelowna is the only revenue MLW in BC, poss Alberta as well...have to check on that. The period when the KPR was all MLW was nice as well.

Here is a few shots in Hop Bottom, PA. We were exploring the abandoned branch line and we managed to snap a few photos of these locomotives switching to pick up a consist of welded rail.

Nice pictures mike_nepa. I guess that branch isn't quite as abandoned as you thought it was  . Just wondering, not sure if this is the right place to ask but why was is that branch being shut down?

Here's a pair from my railfanning trip on the Sunbury/Binghamton Line.

These were shot at Cayuga JCT.

Here's the video from that day as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au8_ZgjJDGw

Enjoy! Take care. Hopefully we'll see more photos soon.

When I saw the shiny CP 6000 sitting in Moose Jaw back in the '80's, I knew the days for the old GP's and F's were over.  By the looks of this one, its days must be coming to a close too.  These engines have certainly done a lot of work, and can still be seen and heard on mainline work.  East of Balgonie, SK, sitting near the Pioneer grain terminal, holding three other engines at bay, May 4, 2008.
