Nice shot, it looks like the area around Newtonville, ON
east of Toronto. Is that the doubletrack CN mainline on the right?

Here's a shot of GP38-2 #7309 resting between switching assignments at Port of Philadelphia.  The ex-D&H unit received her "Golden Beaver" paint shortly before this pic was taken.

Oh Dave...for shame .  On Vancouver Island in the 1990's all motive power on the South end were CP GP38's(See some of my posts on the E&N Railway). Of course CP has GP38's. They have GP38AC's and Dash 2's. The GP38 in that photo is a former D&H unit and kept its D&H numbering. All other CP GP38's are numbed 3000-3099 and 3100-3135.

It's rare, but not unheard of for one to be on a mainline train. Mostly they are for local jobs, or branchwork.

Here on the GT , 38's are used alot on trains that don't go to Canada . Such as taking cars between Flint & Flat Rock , BC to Toledo , BC to PH , stuff like that and local jobs .

I noticed that CP unit has Dynamic Brake also , I have never seen that here

You can see GP38's working with chop-nosed GP9's in Cambridge, ON from the Toyota plant to the yard in Galt. Too bad I was not here sixty years ago-I could have seen the interurbans of the CP's electrified lines-the Grand River Railway and the Lake Erie & Northern-running along the very same line.

Seems like the idea was to give local jobs a cab at both ends of the power consist while still using only one locomotive.   CSX has similar units, however they're wired as slugs and the power unit sends electricity to the traction motors on both units.

Incedentally the CP/D&H 7300's were originally Lehigh Valley 314-325 (at least one was wrecked and scrapped while on the D&H).  They went to the D&H in 1976 when the road was given trackage rights to Buffalo and Potomac VA to serve as a "competitor" to Conrail.  They tend to be assigned to the former D&H lines, in fact some are still wearing blue and grey -

Here is a photo when CP power (usually SD-40 and SD-40-2's) used to visit the New York Susquehanna and Western Railway on a regular basis. CP 5583 is on the point of NYSW train 252 at Ridgefield Park, NJ 7/1998.
