The shot of the summer for me. Besides my via shots i have. This is my favourite train in the whole world. CP 878 a loaded thermal coal train that comes up from minot north dakota with BNSF power then because of the restrictions and such they have to put a CP Leader on at portal so she can come to canada. Here it is at oxbow saskatchewan snaking out of the tunnel and down the hill.

Here is a shot taken September 5th 2005 when I was called spare to fill in on an assigned work train loading ballast in the pit at Swansea, which is 10 miles west of Cranbrook on what was the Nelson subdivision before the Moyie sub came into being. A year after this shot was taken 5566 suffered a serious mechanical breakdown and was declared surplus in December 2006 and is off the roster.

They were shooting this IMAX movie when I travelled with 2816 from Vancouver-Calgary last October. Had a red helicopter from Blackcomb with a massive camera on the front. Some of the guys taking movie on the trip (which cost GBP1,500!) got pretty upset when the chopper intruded at nearly every good location on the trip. Should be a great movie though! Shame we aren't likely to see it in the UK.

The SOO GP9's that were rebuilt at CP Angus shop in 1991 were designated as GP9R, like 4201 here at the Ogden shops in Calgary last winter. This one is an ex conrail geep which started out as NYC GP9 5993, to PC 7393, then to Conrail 7393 before becoming SOO property. I wonder if this unit got repainted or was declared surplus.

Union Pacific SD90mac's which are now approved to lead in Canada on the Kingsgate to Lethbridge corridor are becoming more and more common and the CEFX SD90mac's are becoming less and less common. Here are a couple shots I took yesterday of a loaded grain train westbound about 7 miles east of Cranbrook, British Columbia, likely a 387, with all UP power lead by UP 8306...

It is true that back in the day the 6 axle trainmasters were the normal power on the Rossland sub but the cost of track maintenance would have made sense back then when a whole lot more traffic was shipped by rail. I am not sure the exact differences between a trainmaster and an SD40-2 but I would bet the latter is quite a bit heavier and perhaps the truck frames are longer. I would bet the primary reason that the SD40-2's are prohibited is because of weak track. Here's a shot from last summer taken from the yardmaster's tower window. The yard crew is running acid loads over the scale track in the foreground and the road power is sitting on the next track over.
