Hi,

As a first foray into US outline modelling I have bought an Atlas H24-66 model of CNJ #2407 for use on a friend's layout. The time setting is 1955 so the locomotive will be more-or-less brand new.

I would like to do a few 'improvements' to the model to personalise it and I am trying to understand the variations.

From studying photographs I have noticed that the fittings on the headstocks (big vertical plates above the couplings) vary. There seem to be either one, two or three fittings. Can someone explain what these fittings are (? steam pipes for carriage heating) or kindly point me in the direction of the information?

Thanks,

Richard
