While the new diesels were an improvement, the passengers still had to ride in the old coaches. If anything, the new diesels made the coaches seem even older looking. The economics of passenger trains made it impossible for the commuter lines to invest in new coaches.The exception being the NYS&W in the 50's.
 
Still, those double ended BLW's were impressive.

I assume "The Plain Speaker" got this wrong or the original plan was for the CNJ to purchase and run the entire LNE instead of just the cement and coal lines in Pa? I'm sure there would have been concern on the part of the L&HR and LV over the CNJ running to Maybrook on it's own tracks.
 
This and the purchase of other Lehigh coal RR's was probably the CNJ's last attempt at making it's line profitable. Only a little more than a decade later the CNJ pulled out of Pa for good. Taxes and heavy passenger losses contributed to it's demise.
