Two old CN ballast hoppers sitting at Meyronne, SK on the GWR line, formerly CP.  These hoppers may be heading to GWR??

As I was eating in a local restaurant, I hear the familiar noise of EMD 647 prime movers. The local switchers pull into the siding. Illinois Central #9603 ( EMD GP38 ) is a welcomed guest as I welcome back GTW #5844 ( EMD GP38 ) from the CN shops. It has lost it's GTW scheme for the CN scheme. Same with the Illinois Central unit, once painted black and white. I also welcome back EJ&E #668 ( EMD SD38 ) from the CN shops. It has lost it's green strips at the bottom in turn for reflective safety striping. Here, I catch two quick shots for them idling in a siding in Kankakee, Illinois. I had to hurry, Kankakee is a scary place to have a camera out in the open with if you know what I mean.

Cheers,
Joshua

The City of Kankakee has had some serious gang trouble lately, and I must have been on the wrong side of the tracks, since I was being eyed down by a bunch of teens off screen. I'm not sure if you leave around the area or not, so I wasn't sure how to reply.

Regardless, thanks for the compliment.

Cheers,
Joshua

I just scanned a slide from July, 1973.  I used to hang around the ex-NYC/PC yard a couple miles from home in Rochester, NY.  Found this 1923 CN stock car, but I'm sure it had no livestock in it.  Have to wonder about interchange rules, with wooden body, and 50-year-old car...

CN and CV boxcars used to be loaded with newsprint at the port of Rochester, mouth of the Genesee River, to be delivered to local newspaper.  Warehouses were demolished to make way for short-lived ferry to Toronto.  1974 view, with SP cars, rather than CN, at port:

Well Firstbelt, I was looking at the pic and there is what looks like plywood or something similar inside the car.  I have had some experince with some of these cars when they arrived at a museum.  They had very good evidence of having hauled lube oil and the like as the floors were covered in that rather then what one would expect in a stock car.  I would give even odds on the fact it  was in MOW service at the time the picture was taken.  Now others might be able to verify this but if memory serves there is a limit of 40 years on any car in interchange service.

I don't think the stock car was in MOW service on Penn Central.  We'll probably never know.

A couple photos of early Conrail piggyback with leased CN power, including a couple Alcos, just west of Rochester, NY:

I could be wrong, but I thought it was 50.

What was added or deleted to these units to be able to lead in Canada?

My first visit to Toronto, in 1974; roundhouse area.  My only sighting of an Ontario Northland F unit, mixed in with CN cab units and RDC:

Caught CN 3206 westbound at Bayview Junction, trailing a couple EMDs in 1980.  Looks like a C424, according to the CNRHA web site.
