Re: Why GTW IC DMIR etc on the cabs - By Sbhinder273 on 08/05/07 at 12:23:35 - 'cn5283_SD40-2W.jpg' 338 KB
Another Reason why these subsidaries have to have their sublettering is: under U.S. law a Canadian Rail company that does business in the USA must have a US  partner. Also the railway lines CN owns in the US are not 100% Canadian owned  and the fact is unless the rules change in the US for railways I don't see any changes to CN's roster numbering system that includes sublettering.

Also those Alstom leased CN locos [ 5938 - 5957, and 6900 -- 6949 ] were originally CN locos but since they have been reasigned to the US they are subjected to sublettering.

Also Another railway in Canada Canadian pacific also has a similar arrangement with SOO Line however as some of the SOO Line Locos are being repainted into CP colours they never got sublettering this is due to the history of the CPR.

Balto, you asked a good question and I thought I would show you what the wash rack in Edmonton looks like.  They use it all year long, and you should see them steam at -20.  They usually run them through from the far end and out this side.   Thought after all the great pics you let us see I would send one just for you.

With 4796 now in the lead, loaded grain cars in tow, the train crew has just PK'd the train at Montmartre.  For some reason unknown to me, they bring the train to a crossing at the east end of town, two crew bail off, the train pulls by, then backs up to pick up the men, and they're off.  Makes for a good show as there is a road running along the north side of the track, so I can drive alongside and hear those good old EMDs roaring their way west.

The incident happened on a Monday. This was all removed, with the help of a very large crane,  replaced and trains running the following Sunday.

The derailment was big entertainment in Lytton. Also a great influx of rail fans coming in to see and take photos. I'm surprised someone hasn't already posted some.  I have 4 I will post - they are the best representation I think. Here's the first.

Over the years I've grown to enjoy watching these poor neglected cabooses getting dragged behind the switching trains here in Saskatoon, I know of 3 left in use, one is the most complete, used in winters only, you coild tell that it was heated inside, it had its enginator and axle generator still on it, I can remember one night seeing it go by with it ditch lights and marker lights still glowing, too bad I never got a pic, but I was luck enough earlier this summer to snap pics inside one.

My family & I visited Jasper July 05' during our annual vacation from Scotland. As a train driver (locomotive engineer) in the UK, I was staggered at the sheer length of some of the trains I saw. Here's a picture of my two eldest kids at Jasper station.
