Not to bash the BR&W or start anything... But I've heard the track isn't in the best condition and #60 might break a spring or two running on it. Again this might not be true, but if it is I suspect this might be one of the reasons why #60 hasn't been out or tested. If you look at this this post over at Railroad.net (Second Photo) #60 looks complete and clean... Again just my opinion.

It is a well known fact that the BR&W has terrible track conditions. The track is hard on the locomotive and yes has caused her to break leaf springs in the past. The Railroad wouldn't have sunk thousands upon thousands of dollars into getting the engine to run if they weren't going to run it. While there has been some track improvements over the years, the track is still in rough shape.

Even with the track in less than stellar condition, you would think they would want to get out and running a bit. It is possible that they are still waiting on the FRA...

Espee.. From what I have read on other forums past and present, heard from people at train shows (past and present) and rumors (past and present) the track is not in the best of conditions between flemington and ringoes and #60 COULD break springs left and right and possibly pound the rails. I think the trust, and the volunteers who put all their heart and soul into restoring her know of any "problems, track conditions, etc", and are aware if any problems exsist. When she is ready they will release her onto the rails and once again, after 10 years, we will steam operating even if it is on a limited schedule. No matter what people may say or think on this subject or the BRW in general, make sure you do not hold it against the volunteers that took pride into fixing her up!!

I think the best bet is to make sure crews operated the loco within the SPEED limits of the track conditions.

There are plenty of videos out there of them running the 60 at 25 or 30 MPH over track that was AT BEST, qualified for 15mph.

They were also notorious for fast operations over the Southern end of the line too with both diesel, steam and gas car trips to Lambertville, and this is going back into the 1970's.

In the cab of 60 was a stencil that read "15MPH or 4 minutes per mile" if they stick to that, they shouldn't have as many isses.

I heard that too from a recent e-mail from a friend of mine that also mentioned he heard (NOT A FACT) that they are moving #60 so that they can "break her in" on those tracks than have her "broken" from the poor conditions of the BRW track.

Like I said in my previous post (NOT A FACT) but I am sure we will ALL know when and if it does happen. I can see all the "FOAM" getting ready to make a mess!

A few pictures of #60 from when I was there this past Saturday night - apparently (from what I hear) she's awaiting an FRA inspection before she can get moving again.  Yes, i got permission to go in and take photos!

The rest of the album has photos from the Military Days weekend photo shoot - it was a great time, and I'm looking forward to any future ones they have.

Ok - so help me out here.  After the FRA hydro test - then what?  What has to be done after that to get #60 back on the rails?

I don't know what the condition of the rest of the locomotive is, so I could not give a solid answer but usually after it passes the hydro it is ready to go. But like I said, I know nothing about the engine and what else needs to be done etc.

Mostly it's just a matter of getting people qualified to run her.

She needs an FRA inspection, after that just coal and water.

I can't wait for her to get out - finally - are they still going to start her out on freight runs?
