I'll lead off with a picture of a train on BNSF's Superior, NE. branch, at the station in Abilene, KS.

I changed this one out since it is also found on RP.net. Here's a new pic of an intermodal headed west through my favorite spot on the BNSF, Ellinor Jct. As you can see, the searchlight signals found here are about to be replaced. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if they were history as I type this.
Posted by: zwsplac Posted on: Jul 12th, 2005, 2:45pm
Here's a shot of the signal bridge in Lebo. I'm trying to photograph these A-frame style bridges before BNSF rips them down and replaces them with traffic lights on masts.
Posted by: zwsplac Posted on: Jul 12th, 2005, 2:46pm
Is this BNSF's imitation of a former Milwaukee Road "bandit" scheme? Here's a stack train pulling out of the Emporia, Ks. yard.
Posted by: zwsplac Posted on: Jul 12th, 2005, 2:48pm
Here's the triple track signal bridge at NR Jct in Emporia. It's actually taken in the same spot as the bandit, but facing the other way.

Here's my first ever picture of a BNSF GEVO unit. This train was really moving if you can't tell!
Posted by: zwsplac Posted on: Jul 12th, 2005, 2:52pm
And the entire train was made up of these grain hoppers, so this is my first shot of the new BNSF logo!
These cars must be on their first revenue trip, as they are loaded, but are so shiny, you can see reflections off of them!

Heres one for you taken at "speed"

About 1 hr east of Missola Montana, a BNSF eastbound with non-traditional equipment, on BNSF leased to and leased back trackage to Montana RailLink (MRL); train ran by MRL crews for BNSF;  taken at approximatly 65 MPH by my tour guide in the stepwell of my tourcoach with my camera!   It was amazing to see the 5 locos actually bouncing on the line... the locos were moving up & down about 6 inches and at different times. strange sight to see!
As I past the lead loco I hit my air horn with a quick short short and was quickly responded to by an EMD short short.
My british pax were firstly awestruck by the length of the train as well as size of cars.  Then to hear the train "talk back" to them as I-90 banked to the left and the train stayed on it's straight tangent....  Like two birds banking away from each other.....  it still brings a tear to my eye....

Sorry for the delay, here's a few more and I'll try to keep them in order, Here's the helpers at the crossing in Caliente. The only time I had to shoot and watch trains was late afternoon. some of the spots aren't great for Late PM shots, so I did what I could. We'll see these helpers often as PM shots favor the downhill trains.

You're probably wondering why I'm posting a picture of an NS led train on Union Pacific rails in Topeka Ks? Well, BNSF has a little used trackage rights agreement on the Golden State Route from Kansas City to Vaughn, NM. I have the strongest suspicion that this is one of those hard to find trackage rights trains. The locvation is SJ Junction in Topeka Kansas, and this Rack train is just pulling off the Kansas Sub onto the Golden State Route. Hidden behind that tree is a man who came 15 feet from being hit by this train as he walked across the tracks without a glance left or right. It would've made Matt's blood boil!
Posted by: zwsplac Posted on: Nov 30th, 2005, 2:34pm
My dad and I made a rare railfanning trip together last saturday, finding our way to CA Junction in Camden, Missouri to await Amtrak. Here we have a really hot Z-train peeling off the old Santa Fe onto the old Wabash, now track 3 for a number of miles. He will hold at the end of triple track for Amtrak.

Who takes pictures almost straight into the sun? ME!   I used a truss on the bridge I was on to block it out. That may look like a nice quiet road, but it actually gets quite a bit of traffic I found out! This is an EB intermodal just west of Ottawa, KS.

Great pictures is an understatement. Nice to see them. The BNSF 2006 calendar could use a lot of them. There are some real "dogs" on it compared to these.
X600, where is the loop or what ever you called it?
zwsplac,, the MRL has been on a mission tearing down all the old bridge signals and cantlevers. They were all put in by the NP in the "50s" and "60s". Guess they are getting dangerous to work on. Fatigue I guess. Metal and concrete goes with age I guess.
They weren't much fun to be on when the wind was blowing, which is common in Mt.

Interesting catch sherm. The light catches it just so, that at first glance you can't tell that it's 2 different BNSF engines, one behind the other.

A hodge-podge of Locos at Braid Station, New Westminster British Columbia.

As this is the Junction between CP/CN and BNSF;  railfans can see all sorts of leased and "transiting the zone" locos.   I have seen new primered NS & MRL units; CP & Amtrak Green Goats;  The steam locie for the tourist operation in Tacoma, Washington among others fading from memory.....

Here to the far right are 2 locos that had called Rail America's Vancouver Island line  "Esquimalt & Nanaimo" home for the last 8 years; now transiting to another Rail Generica property......

After years of wanting to visit, I finally trekked to Tehachapi this last weekend and fanned for parts of 3 days. Here are a handful of shots I took during my time there.

First shot, I am standing above the loop, in awe that I'm actually here. BNSF 6046 is in control of a unit steel coil train in the siding and will be meeting BNSF 5247 which can be seen to the right, winding his way towards the loop.

Standing at Bealville after an hour lull in trains, BNSF 7688 showed up and provided a nice show. Right above the locomotive you can see the last cars of the train still passing through Cliff.

The DPUs are along for the ride on this train winding down Caliente Creek

Finally, a BNSF intermodal makes a fine sight in the morning light at Caliente.

The paint scheme on 1023 is the Heritage 1 paint scheme, the first new scheme after the merger.  I don't know how many engines still wear it, but I imagine there were quite a few in that scheme at one time.

Hello.
I just joined today and thought I would share a few of my Photos I took.  I started to railfan the BNSF early spring of 2009.  I started with a camcorder and in June bought a Nikon D40.  You can see a few of my photos at this link below.

While leaving Mojave to head home I noticed a blur of orange off in the distance which prompted me to pull over near the BNSF's Mojave sub near the UP-BNSF jct south of town. The sun was still out, and after nearly 2 weeks of rain and clouds every min. was surely welcome. Soon enough BNSF 5255 showed up with a west bound autorack train, a great way to end the day, BNSF style.

New railfan here, experimenting with my digital camera....this is from Ft Madison, Iowa, which I highly recommend as a railfanning spot -- lots of BNSF traffic. Only a little over an hour from Galesburg, IL which is also very busy!

Sorry, one more from Ft. Madison....I was testing out the night setting on my camera, and aimed at the rear engines pushing a long intermodal freight. Obviously the BNSF detailing is reflective....I have renamed this the ghost train

A loaded southbound BNSF coal train waits on the mainline while a northbound empty runs around on the siding. Norfolk Southern CP Bunch on the Atlanta South District. This single track main is one of the busiest on the system, at that location I saw 4 trains in an hour. Plant Scherer, the destination for the coal, reportedly receives at least 5 loaded trains daily.

Well I've been without internet for over 7 months, doing little on mobile other than checking the forums for others contributions and very minimal railfanning for the last 4 months due to the summer heat and overtime at work.

While there will be more contributions going forward, for today we have a BNSF unit coil steel train on the approach to tackling Tehachapi, departing the Bakersfield yard southbound.

I'd always missed the western road heritage unit grain trains from back in my days of working over the road in Texas, and plains states, here in the central valley I get a good mix of unit grain train action for the numerous large mills, most with their own in plant power.

The last few weekends I've found some time to sit trackside at the Calwa interlocking, where UP crosses the BNSF on the south end of BNSF's Fresno "Calwa" yard. On these trips I've taken minimal pictures and focused more on train logs, something I was introduced to by a good friend a few years back. I'd add in the engine numbers, but most trains have 4 to 7 engines on them, gets messy for this format.
