Love the paint on the battery box, orange AC unit as well! Sure the loco wasnt working down in West Virginia! I did not know the -9s were having turbo issues as well. I did know a bunch of the new Evos were blowing turbines up.....

Great pics and info.  SD40's are slowly making their way out to pasture up in Canada as well.  I live on the CP mainline in eastern Saskatchewan, and I still see the odd SD40-only power consist, and often a mix of Ge and GM power.  Those poor old engines have done a lot of work.

It is sad,  age, and governmental regulation is pushing these workhorses out. There will always be a place for the SD40-2 on class 1 operations, but there numbers will dwindle. These old girls will find some homes on short lines, but often the big long 6axle loco is too much for that application. With both EMDs and soon to be GEs rebuild programs that meet tier 3 standards some of those old frames and hoods will get an extension on life. Now the whisper of electrifying major corridors has begun, hmmmm I wonder if any of those old Milwaukee Road boxcabs are laying around?

I have noticed that many of the SD40s at the BNSF Northtown Yard have been re-numbered as FURX units.  This is especially of those engines on the long term storage tracks.
