I hope to get some better pics during the week when there's more activity at the depot/yard.

Looked around there many times....their GP9 is a true operating museum piece...pretty much entirely unmodified from new in 1957, in its original home..not many like that around...

1685 crossing St. Matthews Ave (I don't normally shoot from inside the car, but...)

The next day, near St. Matthews (they usually show up there btwn 1000 and 1200 - fortunately I have relatives within running distance of the tracks).  This is right where BNSF tracks end and they go onto CP tracks

does bnsf actually run south to interchange at the u.s. border or does cn handle that and just bring the cars into winnipeg?  if so,  this is definately an interesting operation in the sense that it would be the only 'isolated' bnsf  line in canada... unlike the direct bnsf lines into bc here.

Yes, this operation is "isolated" in a sense, as CN operates trains on BNSF'S behalf to and from the U.S. boarder. This was not always the case, as both the NP and GN operated both passenger and freight service into Southern Manitoba. The former Union Station in Winnipeg, (which is still used by Via Rail) served at one time the GTP, CNoR and the NP. The GTP, CNoR and NP also shared the now Via Rail station in Portage La Prairie. All former NP (et all)lines, were either abandoned, or sold to either CN or CP.

Correct me if I am wrong, though I do believe that the Letellier subdivision is the route that CN handles BNSF freight to and from the border as there is one train that goes on these tracks a day from Symington yards to Emerson and back, dropping off, and picking up freight. This is just my best guess, I may be wrong. Here is a pic of the Letellier sub behind my apartment, I wish it was more heavily travelled .

Unfortunately 1685 is being retired, it has been replaced with GP38-2 2710 still in BN Green, word is that they are using this engine temporarily until they find more powerful 4 axle power such as a GP50 or GP60.

Wish I would have got some pictures of 1685 while it was here.

Yes, in Winnipeg, where it belongs. One of very few unmodified geeps, even rarer as a Canadian built unmodified one. It better not wind up as a frame for a genset!!!
