I really don't see the deal here, all Brandon was doing is stating the fact that MWRR is making way for BNSF to take over operation.  Maybe Mr NP Fan is saddened by the changing of the guard.  Whatever the case may be, we will see what awaits us in the future.

Here's the BNSF story on the happenings with Montana Western RR.  It's almost a done deal!

I see BNSF trucks in Butte from time to time.  MWRR was required to clean their right of way of old ties and rubbish, MRL was assisting in the cleanup.  No BNSF power to be seen as of yet.

I wonder if this takeover is part of a plan to do away with leased lines in the BNSF system.  I know BN would love to send Montana Rail Link out the door.  What is interesting to me is that when MWRR is gone, BNSF will be a tiny island surrounded by Union Pacific and MRL.  BN's closest line will be the Helena to Great Falls line. I really wonder what ever they would want with this out of the way line.  Is this the beginning of MRL being bought out of their lease?  Will Homestake Pass be restored to service for increased capacity?  Is BNSF and UP planning an Intermodal facility at Silver Bow on the junction of I-15 and I-90?  The possibilities are abound!

The DM&E RR in my state has received approval to extend rails out to the Sheridan WY coal fields.  This new line would dramatically shorten the distance to haul coal from WY to the Twin Cities and give them a cost advantage over BNSF.  BNSF runs a line across the top of South Dakota into Montana.  I wonder if they are thinking of shipping coal from Montana through Watertown and into Minnesota at some point?  Nothing else out there would have much volume, I don't think.  Both BNSF and UP were running coal trains around the south end of the Black Hills in SD so frequently they were virtually a conveyor belt.  I've have photos later in the week.

The line in Northern South Dakota that BNSF operates is the Milwaukee Road mainline.  There is low traffic on that line as of now. It is jointed rail, so it doesn't see heavy coal traffic yet.  I don't know why they don't make use of it much for coal to the Twin Cities, it's pretty much a straight shot there from SE Montana coal fields.

This line was originally built to haul cattle into the Twin Cities stock yards.  The rancher out in Perkins Co, SD where I hunt antelope said he was on the last cattle drive to the rail head.  That was in 1949.

You can sure tell MWRR is leaving by the way the yard looks.  The weeds look like a tropical rain forest.  But they are picking up old ties and junk around there.

Some guy on the Altamont Press says that BNSF will take over MWRR on August 10 or there about. Still no orange yet.  The man who wrote this is seriously concerned about BN destroying things around here.  I guess only time will tell.
