What's the current status of this out of service crossing of the Continental Divide at Butte, Montana?  I've hearde lots of rumors of abandonment and others about Montana Rail Link wanting to put it in service again. Anybody who knows something or just wants to talk about it, please bring it up.

You may have heard about the recent interest in restoring the Amtrak Northcoast Hiawatha Route through SW Montana.  And some may have heard about BNSF securing Homestake Pass from trespassers.  I will try to keep posting the latest developments of both.  Check out these MT STD links.  This is most news/interest about Homestake that I've ever seen!

I think BNSF may only be making a point here, but I hope it turns into something to do with use of the hill.  Just above the Lucky Strike Bridge (the one visible from I-90) there is a giant boulder that has fallen and blocked and damaged the line.  So if BNSF is looking to store cars there, they'll have some serious work to go beyond there.

This looks like a GREAT reason to restore Homestake back to service, there's 2 small tunnels to daylight, lay down some new ties, rails, ballast and BOOM! She's back in the game!

Maybe they should fix Homestake and store cars on Mullan Pass instead!

Here are the maps of the Montana Division and the whole BNSF system.  Notice that the Copper City Subdivision is the only "island" in the system.  Montana Rail Link leases their territory from BNSF.
