The last few weekends I've found some time to sit trackside at the Calwa interlocking, where UP crosses the BNSF on the south end of BNSF's Fresno "Calwa" yard. On these trips I've taken minimal pictures and focused more on train logs, something I was introduced to by a good friend a few years back. I'd add in the engine numbers, but most trains have 4 to 7 engines on them, gets messy for this format.

A hotshot intermodal and another southbound freight awaiting a re-crew bracket a set of light power awaiting a signal at the Calwa interlocking. This location is on the south end of the BNSF Fresno (Calwa) yard where the single track Union Pacific mainline through the central valley crosses over the double track BNSF mainline, with numerous Amtrak moves and a steady stream of freight to keep railfanning here very interesting.

Unit grain train making the loop at Tehachapi. The four engines in the background are the lead units taking the train north toward Bakersfield about to go through the tunnel under the rest of the train including the 3 mid train helpers in the foreground. I'd always missed the western road heritage unit grain trains from back in my days of working over the road in Texas, and plains states, here in the central valley I get a good mix of unit grain train action for the numerous large mills, most with their own in plant power.

Well I've been without internet for over 7 months, doing little on mobile other than checking the forums for others contributions and very minimal railfanning for the last 4 months due to the summer heat and overtime at work.

While there will be more contributions going forward, for today we have a BNSF unit coil steel train on the approach to tackling Tehachapi, departing the Bakersfield yard southbound.

This is what I would normally haul sometimes, most times it's 8'6"-10' ties,
and 25' to 40' rails from insulated joints, transitions, to step rails, and other stuff like switch stands, switch points, frogs, and other stuff.

Here's the truck that I drive, I usually don't haul people from the job site, but since the parking lot was a 1/4 mile away I was glad to give them a ride, imagine if I could apply a fee for the ride,5$ for section men, and 10$ for supervisors, and foreman

Here is a new area that I've never seen a picture on yet. This was taken of a local that works between Cody,Wy. and Frannie,Wy. each day. Frannie is on the old Q main line from Laurel,Mt.,Casper,Wy. and Denver, Co.
This was taken S. Bound returning to Cody about 5 miles S. of Frannie. The Pryor Mtns. in Mt. are in the background.

Here are the last of the Milw. Little Joe's. The pans are down for the last trip. I don't know if they were sold, scrapped or what. These were in the Deer Lodge yard.

I just had to put this picture up here again in a larger size. I still like the old NP colors scheme.
Thanks

Do you have any pictures of this?

I know that there was a 20 car derailment in McKenzie, ND this summer, too.

Seems like there's always a derailment up there, somewhere.  Below is a photo I took of one near Hillsboro, ND.  The most spectacular derailment was in August.  A big storm came through with 70 mph winds.  Caught a stack train on the big trestle near LuVerne, ND, and blew it right off!  Big mess with all the containers down in the valley.

This is a picture of the last East Bound North Coast Limited power leaving Deer Lodge. Spring of 1971
This is looking West on Milwaukee Ave. Notice the old STOP lights on the mast of the crossing signal. They were kind of unusual.

This was a picture of a BA&P west bound west of Durant. Probably take n in the middle 1970's.
These have all been scanned from slides, so the quality isn't the best.

Hi,
Mullan tunnel has always had problems since it was built. Bill and Jan Taylor have written a book about it, Northern Pacific's Mullan Pass. Good reading about all the problems.
I'm going to try to put 3 pictures on here. I guess I might have to do it one at a time.
This 1st was taken just North of the Deer Lodge depot. It was a reroute account of the tunnel being out of service right after the BN merger. There were some big trains run over Homestake during the reroute.
The solution to the problem would be boring a new tunnel at a lot lower level.

Why haven't I thought of using Google Earth Good stuff!!
The tracks are labeled right going into the canyon.
If I'm not mistaken, the NP/BN had track rights on the UP's Silver Bow to Butte line. But I can't be positive about that, but thats what sticks in the back of my mind. We maintained the track and signals, but, there was some billing thing that is back in the cobwebs?
Eric, the reason that the line looks so good is it doesn't have that ugly BN signal/4400 Volt line anymore.

Here is Silver Bow, Montana.

Junction of I-90 and I-15;  Junction of UP & BNSF.

Question:  Does UP have trackage rights into Butte, or is it BNSF on UP into Butte?

Re: Montana Western is out! - By Pyronova on 10/05/06 at 17:00:17 - '3RR_in_a_Canyon.jpg' 277 KB
When exploring Google Earth, I found the following....

West of Silver Bow, (west of Butte Montana)  It appears that the NP; Butte, Anaconda & Pacific; and the Milwaukee Road all had to use the same canyon.   I have marked what I believe to be the correct names for each line.  From what it appears,  MILW and BAP shared a couple of miles from Butte to this canyon.    Corrections please if incorrectly marked!
