MARC and Amtrak do both use HHP8 motors.  "Acela," however, is a brand that applies only to the Amtrak trainsets.

As for the NJT equipment...tho just borrowed to meet high demand on Thanksgiving weekend, it does get an Amtrak train symbol when in use as an extra.

Title: Re: Amtrak pictures part 2
Post by IrishChieftain on Dec 8th, 2005, 6:18pm
The HHP-8s originally had "Acela" decals IIRC; these got replaced even before "Acela Regional" became "Regional" and the stillborn Acela Commuter (remember that one?) remained the Clockers until the recent transfer into NJT hands.

Rumors still abound that Amtrak's decision-makers continue to have the ALP-46 under consideration, possibly even to replace the HHP-8...they were and are impressed by the performance of that loco when pulling Amtrak Clockers (some of those having 14 cars)...

Title: Re: Amtrak pictures part 2
Post by PW_bullet_train on Dec 8th, 2005, 7:01pm
I like the ALP's because of their interior layout.  You have a central isle with electrical equipment on both sides.  They have great pulling power, too.  The Bananas are a good performing locomotive, but they tend to hunt, and they have too much torque for lighter trains.  Their wheelslip control takes effect when they are accelerating even on dry rail, making for a lot of back-and-forth motion for the passengers in the coaches, unless you notch out very gradually.

Hello everyone,
I recently have changed favorite photo spots on the NS Pittsburgh Division.  This morning I caught the eastbound Amtrak leaving Greensburg, Pa.  The lead unit was Amtrak 135.  By the looks of it, she has had a nasty bump of some kind on the nose.  I looked up other pictures of her and she has lead the Southwest Chief on occasion.  Does anyone know if she was bumped recenty?

Remember when the Metroliners ruled the Harrisburg line?  Well, they still do, albeit in depowered form (as shown earlier).  Here are some photos from about 25 years ago when the "Lead Sleds" rocketed back and forth from Philly to Harrisburg.  Approaching 30th St. Upper Level.  At this time, Harrisburg trains originated at Suburban Station.

The station is full of Metroliners!!!  At one time, there was a lot of talk of single-tracking and permenantly de-electrifying the line.  But now there are more round trips than there were in many years, and electric power has returned to the Keystone line.  As I mentioned before, the Mets are still there, but are now in depowered form.  Thank you, Mr. Rendell for all the $$$$ for new track and ties and for the refurbishment of additional locomotives and cab cars for this service.  May your legacy live on!!

This shot not only showcases the Metroliner, but also (at right) the train announcement boards.  Before electronic screeens, a RR worker had to come out with a long pole with a hook on the end and pull the appropriate train board down from the metal hood above.  Wish one of those would pop up on eBay ;)...

I believe these car called "Economy" rooms.  Roomettes were for single passenger travel, the "Economy" rooms are suitable for single or double occupacy.

No, Amtrak changed the various names of the rooms about three years ago now, IIRC.  The smaller room on the current Amtrak equipment, once called Standard, is now the Roomette.  What used to be called a Deluxe Bedroom, is now known simply as a Bedroom.

But I don't think there have ever been sleeper accomodations on Superliner trainsets that were only suitable for one passenger...  Even though the nomenclature has changed (way to really muck things up for frequent users), the layout hasn't - so far as I know.  I could totally be wrong.  But I think that there have always been a mininum capacity of two persons in all Amtrak sleepers - at least the Superliners.

And you bring up an interesting point.  Today, ALL sleeper passengers are first class passsengers.  Has there been a time in Amtraks history (perhaps in the Technicolor days) that there were different 'classes' of sleeper passengers?

Correct, the Superliner's have always had the same layout and rooms that accomodate two.  In fact the only variation of a Superliner sleeper was the 6 Deluxe Sleepers that were purchased for use on the Auto Train.  Instead of roomettes/standard rooms on the upper level, they have 10 bedrooms/deluxe bedrooms on the upper level.  Normal is 5 Deluxe bedrooms on the upper level.

Palm Beach (32501) was badly damaged in the Auto Train derailment 5 years ago and is still out of service.  Last I heard it was only being held for insurance purposes and once released from that, it will most likely be scrapped.

;)I have been coming to Darby Station know for over 50 years to watch
trains. Back in the 60s you saw all kinds of train rolling down the four
track main line. Today just passenger trains. Here is a picture of
Acela passing the station. For Acela next stop is Wilmington, De.

There are a number of private cars, including a number of domes, available for charter. All it takes is money. Typical rates seem to be roughly $3-5,000 per day if memory of the last time I looked at some of the rates serves..

Consolation prize...

Well, today I decided to take my daughter to visit my mom at the nursing home. I usually take a camera everywhere I go.  But today I "knew" I wasn't going to see any trains so, I figured, why bother.  Afterall, the baby's enough of a handful.

So I pull into the nursing home parking lot, which is directly adjacent to the tracks of the former PRR/Septa West Chester branch, but well beyond the point where Septa service ends.  Imagine my surprise as I'm getting te baby out of her carseat and over my shoulder hear the clear blast of a diesel airhorn!  Into my view, and in perfect sun, comes Septa switcher 51 coupled to...are you ready...the West Chester RR's Alco 4230, now in PRR scheme. Yep. And no camer anywhere.  So we made the best of it, and the baby and I waved to the crews of both engines, who obligingly waved back.  (edited to add: Fortunately, chuchubob got photos! (http://chuchubob.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=935897))

So this afternoon, I went out to Media in hopes of seeing the WCRR unit parked there, perhaps awaiting night service on the wire train or trak-cleaning "leaf train". No such luck.

My consolation prize: a visit to the NEC, where a 40-minute wait produced a single train.

So here it is.

It ain't no Alco but...

I usually spend Turkey Sunday trackside, watching the Amtrak traffic and hoping for some borrowed NJT or Marc equipment. This year, my daughter came with me, but was more interested in the trackside playground. So while I did see 2 AEM-7's, 2 Acela train sets, 2 Septa locals, a string of NJT m.u.'s, and an Amtrak HHP-8...I only got one photo.

No worries, tho. Being Daddy to my baby girl makes it all ok.

Oh - I dunno about that. Seems like we are (as of 1/1/2011) looking at 365 days (if you count today; 364 othrwise) left in the first decade of the 21st century - since it didn't start until 1/1/01....

Handsome car, Dover Harbor - if i had a LOT of money (appears to average $7400 first day, and $3-4K per additional day...) probably charter it to see Glacier, Grand Canyon again and parts between.

Clyde - All -

These days, "pretty" costs more! Should one get into some older photos, the all new SIEMENS units are simply more of an old theme.
Take a look at SNCF (France) power of now over more than five decades back. Seems like old times?

Vern  - yeah, I know that.  No telling what a custom design, even minor cosmetics, would cost. Wouldn't be money well spent IMO. But the things are still ugly. Just like the French predecessors. I recall most of the German electrics from my time in Germany near fifty years gone as being, at least, sort of hulking. Had a sort of a sense of presence. Which from the pictures, these don't. Oh well, as long as they work right.

Yes, they do indeed have to back in for the stop when going eastbound.  But then this is already a long stop and the reason that they back in is to be next to the building for US Custom's work.  So the train is already scheduled to be there for well over an hour anyhow.

Going westbound to Canada the train stops on one of the pull through tracks and no backing move is required.

I'm not sure how the opening of the new station in Niagara will affect the current procedures.

OK, makes better sense, what with the delays inherent in a backing movement. No problem if you are going to be sitting for a while anyhow and need to make things easy for ICE agents.

I recall going into Houston in the 1950s - Union Station was all stub tracks and all arrivals were accomplished by a backing move. Most seemed to involve a stop and a substantial wait before the backing move commenced. Never did understand  why that was, as can't recall ever seeing any crossing traffic on the Houston Belt & Terminal between the passenger train on the Wye and the station throat (there were some crossings IIRC - been a long time),nor any trains coming out that might have occupied the arrival track and had to clear. but - i was a kid, and I'm sure there w some reason involved.

Don't know about Houston, but some stations had hand throw switches to do their wye movements.  That slows things down.

For the two Memphis stations, Central had hand throw turnouts and Union had power operated turnouts.  Best I recall, the pull past and back around the wye going in move was allowed about 15 minutes more than the straight pull out around the wye departure move.  This is about what it took for the Frisco at Central.  I did that a couple of times.  I think it was a few minutes less going into Union, but only did that once or twice and at a younger age.

Would hate to have money riding on the matter - but I seem to recall a brakeman hitting the ground to throw the switches, but mainly it seems (in memory) we'd pull to a stop and then just sit for an extended time. Long enough that recall getting restless whike waitiing. Leaving - when the time came, the train left and that was usually it until the first stop (Teague; then Corsicana and Waxahachie). 283 miles in 4 hours. That was the Sam Houston Zephyr and the Twin Star Rocket, Union Station in Houston (now a baseball field) to Dallas Union Station, still in use (hooray!!).

Amtrak train #67 experienced some sort of service disruption around Philadelphia, PA on 1/20/15 and was running very late. As a result the decision was made to run a substitute consist out of Washington DC. So, here we have Amtrak #95, a P42DC on Train #67 without the usual baggage car behind the engine. Peninsula Sub at CA23, 1256Hrs.

A little different from the preceding photos... a couple from 1974, early Amtrak years:
Rochester, NY former New York Central station still had two platforms with canopies.  The doorway on the far platform opened to a stairway that led to a passageway under the mainline.  A concrete bumper that hasn't been demolished, or whatever you do with them:

Amtrak E8A 267 was former New York Central 4052, leading a westbound.  You can see traces of the cigar band on the nose showing through Penn Central paint.  :P

Spring of 1974 saw a handful of observation cars on Amtrak's Empire Service.  Bringing up the rear of a westbound, passing through the yard in Rochester, I think the road number was something like 3345.

#3345 was a Tavern-Lounge-Observation, from Budd in 1947 for SAL. All the domes were in the 9000s (actually, lowest AMTRAK number for a dome was 9200, a 19948 Dome-Sleeper for the Chessie). Probably one of the Dome-parlor-obs from BN-Q or N$W (ex-Wabash) - 9300, 9301 or 9310.

Its been reported on one of the Amtrak lists at Yahoo! Groups that five of the new Viewliner II baggage have entered service.  Many more remain down in Florida awaiting their turn at entering operation.

Not many place you can catch a P40DC and a steam era water column. Amtrak #835 is normally seen on the Auto Train.

This is one of those photos that would confound historians in the future. If they had little to no caption information they would try to decipher what the photo was of by the contents they could identify. First they would note the location by the station sign, Lee Hall, and look at maps to find the location in Virginia. Depending on the age of the map they looked at, the station could be on either side of the tracks, but let us suppose they guessed correctly and made the decision that it was on the north side of the tracks. This would mean a post 2009 date and we are looking at a westbound train. Snow on the ground would tell us it was winter. The long shadow of the station would tend to confirm this and make the point that this is an early morning train. That would make it train #94, the only early morning train through Lee Hall, which was indeed a westbound move. They would make note of the Locomotive, Amtrak #15, a P42DC. A run of the mill GE that Amtrak used starting in 1996, but this one has a paint scheme that came on the scene in 2001. But what about that baggage car? Those came out in 2015. But wait, train #94 did not carry a baggage car! The only trains through Lee Hall that had a baggage car were eastbound #67, a mid-day train and its counterpart #66 that was a late afternoon train westbound. So just what are we looking at? Well back in 2016 there was a storm that wreaked havoc with the east coast. Seems the last Amtrak train into Newport News, the eastern terminus past Lee Hall was #67. It arrived a little over an hour late on Friday 1/22/16 due to the weather it encountered on the run south from Washington D.C. and east from Richmond, VA. As it turns out due to the weather no Amtrak trains ran again in the area until it was decided to use the consist from #67 to perform the duties of train #94 on Tuesday morning, 1/26/16. While the storm was not THAT bad in this part of Virginia, you may have seen a news report or two that indicated the weather did create a few problems for some of the other areas this train serves.
