Heard Southwest Chief derailed in Kansas on news this AM. 32 hurt, so could have been worse. Praying for those involved.

Engineer reported significant bend in track (heat kink?) just before the derailment (apparently went into emergency immediately, but, well, it takes a little while to stop, eh?).

Most distressing to learn of this event. Info coming out cites Engineer testimony. He has related he spotted a bad spot on track ahead,
and immediately dumped brakes for a full application. At reported 75 mph (which the recorders will back up), that is 110 ft/second. Even
on the best of clear moonlit nights, and a long stretch of tangent track ahead, no way to make a fast stop...

Even with the barest of info we have, your writer estimated it may have been a broken rail or failed track structure. Our old hands with
much time in the rail business better informed to comment on all of it...

FYI: The classic Super Chief, via La Junta routing...  https://www.amtrak.com/southwest-chief-train
