Gentlemen:

The following photos recall the early days of AMTRAK's "Rainbow Fleet", where the cars inherited from numerous roads were still painted in their original colors, and still bearing their original lettering.

I hope that these photos will bring back at least a few memories for some of you who can recall this colorful era firsthand.

We start out our nostalgic journey with a long-ago yard scene, taken in 1971......

IMHO, one of the most classic of all vintage AMTRAK portraits.......you can almost HEAR those big engines thrumming and SMELL the diesel exhaust, wafting through the air.....

Train #041, 1972, with a UP car bringing up the rear.

Note the GN coach on the left; soon, a number of these cars would head east to the CNJ, where, along with a number of ex-BN cars; trains of these cars would become known as "JERSEY BUILDERS", hauling suburban New Jersey commuters to and from Gotham........

(also note ex-NYC "Flexi Vans")

So much of the "Classic Era" of American railroading was still on hand, back in 1971.........

Fast-forward to 1995; "Heritage" cars are still in revenue service, but the "Rainbow Fleet" colors of AMTRAK's early days are long gone.

A lone "AMFLEET" waits patiently in the background.......

"THE 'RAINBOW ERA', REVISITED" (this 2008 gathering of private cars at Chicago easily recalled the very early days of AMTRAK).......
