Just a quick inquiry:

Do any of the "Heritage" baggage cars remain in Amtrak service, or have they all been retired.

If all retired, I would imagine at least some were transferred to MOW service.

Thank you in advance for any input.....

There are still quite a few in use though their numbers will be dwindling once more of the Viewliner II cars are placed in service.  A good place to look for numbers would be the Passenger Car Photo Index.  New links most of the time are cars that are still in service or were fairly recently...

Thank you....appreciate this info!

Good to know, at least for now, that there are still a number of these classic cars still in service, functioning as they were built to.....

Their numbers are dwindling fast; very fast.  As of September 1st there were only 35 of them left on the active roster.  There were 57 of the new Viewliner II baggage cars on the active roster and I think that several more were just accepted about a week or two ago.  Which could mean that even more of the old ones have been retired.

If they're not all entirely gone by the end of the year, I wouldn't expect that there will be many left.

And a perhaps a few might be saved for MOW work or something similar, but most will be scrapped.

Appreciate this news, as sad as it is.

These cars are historic in their own right, as they represented so many Fallen Flags; I certainly hope at least a few will go to rail museums for preservation.

With those "Heritage" baggage cars poised to become history, the torch will be passed on to the now-classic "AMFLEET" cars; these cars, IMHO, say "AMTRAK" more than any other piece of equipment in their fleet.

I've long felt that the "AMFLEET" cars represented Amtrak far more than most folks realize.

Like so many other types of now-gone passenger equipment, too many of us (myself included) took these humble baggage cars for granted ("Oh, they'll still be here next week....or next year..."

Time flies far too fast for my tastes....

Train #41 (at Sebrig, Ohio) blasts through the wintry landscape on this frigid day in 1978.

For those of us now recalling the glory days of "Heritage" baggage cars, this snowy scene is both classic and timeless.......

Chicago, 1974.

You can practically SMELL the nostalgia (as well as the diesel exhaust!) in this colorful old "Heritage" scene, over 40 years ago.....

Said the same thing about cabooses (cabeese?) back in the day - and then it was EOT devices and the caboose was a display somewhere. Maybe.

Clyde:

Agreed; "cabeese" disappeared far too fast for my tastes; not only that, it never entered my mind back then  that the humble little car (red or otherwise) trailing every freight, would one day be relegated to history.

Interlocking towers.....First-generation diesels.......express cars.....clerestory roof coaches....combines....RPO's....observation cars.....yes, my friend, they all seemed that they would always be with us.

Then again, I never thought I could ever thought I could be nostalgic for the 70's, when AMTRAK was still operating a kaliedescopic "Rainbow Fleet".......

Both classic and nostalgic is this view of Train #6 (no photo location given) taken in 1972.

Would love to see such as consist on AMTRAK rails today.....

Cool.....glad it worked the second time around! ;

As you can see from those other old photos, there was NO shortage of "Heritage" baggage cars on AMTRAK (or, for that matter, any other "Heritage" equipment!)

Not then...

I've got dome "Rainbow" slides somewhere I took in the Spring of 1974 at Charlottesville, VA while I was at the JAG School. Train came through during the lunch hour and I took to packing a camera. Most of them were just grab shots and not that good.
