Gentlemen:

Perhaps I'm getting older; perhaps I'm getting nostalgic for things I never thought I would feel a sense of longing for in later years.

When I see photos of today's NEC services (AMTRAK and NJT) I realize just how much has changed since the 70's and the 80's.

Color schemes now obsolete, equipment now relegated to scrap yards, work service, or museums.......so much has changed that (at least IMHO) I find myself even feeling twangs of nostalgia for the 70's and 80's, something I never thought possible, in my younger days.

This topic will bring hopefully back memories of the NEC as it was back in the 70's and 80's, showing the many changes since then.

Hope you enjoy the ride.....

"H.F.M."

Undated view at New York's Penn Station.

The fact that we are seeing an ex-NH FL-9 in charge of this Amfleet-equipped train tells us that this is a pretty dated view.

Though no longer wearing its classic NH McGuiness colors, it still is a fine looking engine.......

Well, not an East Coast boy, so little experience with the NEC. Especially not in the 70s or 80s, other than  few trips from Aberdeen to DC during the two weeks in the summers of 72 and 73 when I was at APG for Advanced Course as a reserve officer.

AMTRAK was new then and the passenger power was GG-1s, many still in either PC or Conrail schemes.

Even this impressive 1985 view of an AEM7 (Penn Station, NY), sporting "old school" AMTRAK livery, has an air of nostalgia today.

The cigarette advertisement over the platform further dates this photo...

I can still recall when the new "Jersey Arrow" MU's were the sleekest commuter cars on the rails; quickly, they became as commonplace as the ancient and stalwart ex-PRR MP-54's which they replaced.

Here we see an outbound train emerging from the depths of the Hudson River tubes, at the Begen Portals, in 1980......

I've long felt that the hulking E60's have long been underrated by many; understandbly so, I would imagine, as they began to replace the legendary GG-1's on "The Corridor".

This view of an eastbound train is at Harrison, NJ, back in 1976......

Even when wearing a somber black coat, the timeless GG-1 still remained a most distinctive and recognizeable machine.

This E/B train was caught on camera in 1974, just after pulling out of Penn Station, Newark.....

Another 1970's GG-1 shot, this one showing a W/B train at Harrison, passing through the PATH station.

The cars behind the big "G" themselves are now classic examples of vintage streamlined equipment......

I've long had a soft spot for the original METROLINER MU's; note that, in this 1972 photo (E/B, at Harrison), the two lead units are sporting the new AMTRAK colors, while the two other cars are still in PC livery.......

When these modernistic electrics first hit the P-C rails, battery-operated toys in their likeness were being sold......

Another wonderfully dated view is this shot of E60 #604 at Newark, with several express cars visible behind......

Another view at Newark (with express cars); this time, the power on this run is AEM7 #951......

The classic ex-PRR heavyweight coaches, led by GG-1 #4876 at Newark, easily date this early P-C scene.......

Who amongst us wouldn't wish to travel back to 1969, and witness this impressive GG-1double-header at Harrison!

Note PATH train on the extreme left.

Certainly a lot of railroad history here......

After the Aldene Plan of 1967, CNJ passenger trains were rerouted from the CNJ's Jersey City ferry terminal to Penn Station, Newark.

CNJ Shore trains, bound for points along the NY&LB (North Jersey Coast Line), could now be found dashing along beneath PRR catenary and PL's, on thier way to Perth Amboy, to connect with the NY&LB.

Here is a handsome GP-40P hauling a train of heavyweights through the now-closed South Street station in Newark.....

Another nostalgic view at South Street (Newark), dating to 1969.

A P-C work train is here passing through the deserted station; the ex-NYC bay window caboose really dates this old scene!

Aaaahh, nostalgia........

The oldest photo so far in this thread shows a short train of MP-54 MU's at the old North Elizabeth station.

This is one of those truly classic "old-timey" views.......

When this GG-1 scene was snapped in 1976, AMTRAK was but five years old.......

For such plain "workaday" machines, the oft-neglected E60's indeed did have a distinct air of pride and power about them.

These two scenes date to 1976.

The charming, quaint North Elizabeth station would have seemed more at home at a more suburban location, than on the bustling NEC........

In another scene at North Elizaberth in 1976, we see a METROLINER zipping through the station, passing a freight.

Who ever thought that such "ordinary" scenes would one day bring about pangs of nostalgia for another time......

By the date of this 1976 photo, the venerable ex-PRR MP-54's were indeed fast approaching their final runs.

This train, now sporting P-C green, also serves to remind us of the nostalgia and the variety once so commonplace along the NEC......
