Here is part of an e mail i received on the June 30th date

Front line managers and certain clerical employees got the word that the Board has approved the train-offs of multiple routes effective June 30. However, due to the "secret" nature of this agenda, the details of the plan will not be publicly announced.

So does this mean on September 30th, the LD trains will finally be history?

Well here is the thing if 180 day notices come out July 1st 2006 that would put the trains to come off on Jan 1st 2007.

But if Bush does not give Amtrak any money for 2007 it would most likley end before that.

If you can all remember about 2-3 months ago i put an issue out about Station closings and unstaffing issues they were trying to pull this off to where it all could take place before the FY2007 started.

But since the information leaked out to the public they were under to much pressure to act on it and pushed it back to the issue we have now.

Bush, as President, doesn't "give" (or deny) money to AMTRAK. He proposes a budget (including a transportatin budget). CONGRESS tehn messes with it and at some point passes a budget. Taht does or does not include money in some amount for AMTRAK.

The President then either signs or vetoes the budget bill.

Bush, as President, is certainly involved - but Congress is too. We will see what Congress does (which is why it is IMPORTANT to contact your Congressman and your Senators). At teh moment, AMTRAK (and rail passenger rtravel) does NOT have a friend in teh White House or DOT. It does have friends in Congress, but tehy need to know constituents care.

But remember who runs the Amtrak Board{Bush Admin} and Bush tells the Amtrak Board what to do thats where Bush comes into play on really dismantling Amtrak.

Agreed - he does have control of the Board, but even taht is limited if Congress gets its back up a little (better, gets its back up a lot). Which is why we need to lean as hard as we can on our Congress critters, both US reps and Senators. ANd if you have a governor who might have the right attitude, encourage him. In Texas, I'm afreaid any attempts to get the governor to do or say anything would be an utter waste of effort. Not to mention trees and/or electrons...

Here is 1 other part of an e mail i have received.

My understanding is that this gentleman is looking for reasons to discontinue long distance trains and perhaps close some stations.  Lets not give him reason for that.  Please make certain everything is neat and clean and that you are in proper uniform - long sleeve white shirt and uniform slacks.
