Hopefully next year there will be more longer trips to Roaring Springs and Martinsburg, where there are steep grades and tight curves.

One of the better spots is on Monastery RD. at a place the RR calls Kladder.
The Pumpkin Patch trains would stop just beyond the crossing, the kiddies would unload and claim their pumpkin, pose for pics, and then the train would reverse to Hollidaysburg.

The ex DL&W MU's stored at Mahwah NJ. Quite a few made it to tourist lines.

In addition to the Boonton cars, the ex CNJ and ex DL&W mu's have been very popular in tourist service.

Re: "Boonton" and Stillwell cars in tourist service - By NEFAN on 10/14/15 at 10:18:49 - 'NJT_CNJ_coaches_Suffern_NY_1184_2.jpg' 37 KB
In this discussion we touched on what became of the ex CNJ coaches and ex DL&W MU coaches. Many became part of tourist operations and museums with the rest meeting the torch I would assume.

NJ Transit stored quite a bit of them on the ex Erie main in Mahwah NJ & Suffern NY in the early 80's.

Here are the ex CNJ coaches awaiting their fate...

Found this one. Here is a Boonton line coach on the Valley RR in Connecticut. The open vestibules make it look much older than it is. -1981

Wow Norm - great photos. I also checked out the other "Redwood Country" thread. That was a great trip. The Stillwell coaches looked good in the bright colors. Much different from ERIE green!

I was able to check out the California Western quite a few years ago, but the steamer and Stillwell coaches were gone. Only the M300 was running at the time. (1986)

Re: "Boonton" and Stillwell cars in tourist service - By Norm_Anderson on 09/29/15 at 03:12:08 - 'superskunk-a.jpg' 65 KB
WG, I had the pleasure of riding in a set of "Archies" during the summer of 1967 and 1968, when they were in service on the California Western Railroad, running through the Redwood groves along the Noyo River between Willits and Fort Bragg, CA.  The cars were immaculate and well-maintained.  (Unfortunately, more recent videos I've seen show no trace of these iconic old gems).  But it was a wonderful trip, and one I can still clearly recall.  A more thorough description may be seen over on the "Regional Railroad Operations" board, on the "California" forum, in a thread titled "Redwood Country."

Regards,

Norm

A friend of mine took this on the Gettysburg RR in the 80's. Note the Stillwell coach behind #76. Not sure where these wound up after passenger operations ended.

You brought up the old DL&W MU's; I have seen many photos of these old childhood friends, showing them demotored and motorman's windows paneled over, hauled by either steam or diesel power.

(Didn't Blue Mountain & Reading obtain some of the old MU's?)

Even so, these former electric cars are still easily recognizeable for what they once were.

The ex MU's are very popular on tourist RR's. Here are two on the Catskill Mountain RR. The motorman windows are still in place. I also rode many miles on these as a kid. It is good to see them still in service.

That's actually Southern J-class #542, dressed up as 604 for the movie Leatherheads. The real NCTM 604 is undergoing a pretty major restoration effort. They dressed 542 up as 604 because 604's tender was already painted and available to use in the filming. Here she is in 2004; the cosmetic restoration took place earlier this year.

These are the railways 3 open air cars. There old cattle cars!!! The railway got them from the CPR and did a lot of work to them. There really nice on a hot summers day but when it rains, there a real pain to try and clean between trains  . Not to mention work in  . August 18, 2007.

Here is an old CPR caboose that sits in the yard. It is the railways Bunk house. Volunteers can sleep in it if they are working the next day. In 2006, the fireman for 3716 lives about 300 km away and he would drive up on Wednesday night and live in the caboose from Wednesday to Monday. Then would drive back home on Monday night. The railway is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Another volunteer lived in the caboose last year too. I was talking to one of the other volunteers while I was working there and he said "If you would like, we can give you a summer job here for next year and you could just find a place to stay or live in the caboose if you would like". I'm still thinking about this offer. But I'm not sure my mom would like me to live in a caboose all summer long  . It's sometimes is a drag beeing 15  . August 19, 2007.

Here is an old steam traction engine that sits in the yard. Everyone I talked to at the railway had no idea about it's history. All they knew is that it was donated to the railway years ago and the railway has no idea of what to do with it. August 16, 2007.

Here is the railways big attraction. The Trout Creek Trestle/Bridge was built in 1913 was 189 metres (619 feet) long, including a 76 metre (250 feet) steel truss bridge, with two trestle approaches. It was the highest structure on the KVR line, at 72 metres (238 feet) above the creek. In the late 1920's the trestles were filled in with dirt. Andrew McCulloch, Chief Engineer of the KVR, personally oversaw the construction of the bridge. Upon it's completion, his calculations were out a mere quarter of an inch.

This information was taken from a sign at the beginning of the bridge. This picture was taken in 2004 when the bridge was still under restoration and closed to all public and trains. The bridge was opened in 2005, and now the trains go out on it. Since there are no tracks on the other side, the train stops and sits on the bridge for about 5 minutes then heads to the station at the end of the bridge. When the bridge opened, they had to build a new area to fill the tender with water and a new station across the street closer to the bridge.

Here is the KVSR's second steam engine, a shay. Mayo Lumber #3 was the first engine the railway had. Built in 1924 for the Mayo Lumber Company. Now owned by the BC Forestry Museum, it is on long term loan to the railway. Arriving for the opening of the KVSR in 1995, it was the driving forse of the railway until 2005 when 3716 was put into service. 3716 now pulls all train. In 2006, #3 came out a few times and did a couple of double headers with 3716 but it has yet to run in 2007. I haven't seen the engine run since this picture was taken in August of 2004. If the shed door for 3716 is open, you can see it sitting on the next track. The engine needs a lot of repairs to make it be able to pull trains again. It can't get the 5 coaches up the grade anymore.
