It's gotta be the Alco S6 for me. Here is the NDC S6 101 built in February 1956. Although the RS3 is my second favorite

It has to be the RS3 with the PAs & FAs close behind. The RS3s were the first locos that I fanned as a kid, both in Erie and E-L schemes. This photo was taken at the station down the street from my house in Hawthorne, NJ back in happier railroading days on the Mainline.  ;D

I'd probally have to go with the D&H C-628's. They looked great in the "lighthning scheme" and were very powerful.

For me, S-1s and S-2s because they've been workhorses in upstate NY for my entire life.  I also like the Centuries because they just look (and sound) powerful.  PAs and FAs have great lines, too.  Oh heck, there's no such thing as a bad Alco!

Long Island FA's.  Even though they did not have prime movers, they still looked great.  NH PA's painted in McGinnis were great looking machines as well.

Definitely the PA.  When a diesel is named as an honorary steam locomotive based on its design, you know it has some style. ;)  Of course they looked good in almost anything, but the Bluebirds were probably my favorite.  (photo courtesy rr-fallenflags.org)

Hi All,

Alcos seem to look great in ALL color schemes. However, somewhat prejudiced, I like the west coast colors especially the red Warbonnet. I have four PA units in my HO stable, and they look great in PRR, B & O, SP, and of course, Santa Fe. I also have an FA unit, B & O and it also looks great. It really is a shame that they are not still around, in production.

Here's an RS-3 that operates on the Adirondack Scenic in full lightning stripes:

That pic looks straght out of the '50s but it was actually shot in the '90s! ;D This RR operates excursions exclusively, so there's an opportunity to ride behind her.  Here's a link to their official site:
www.adirondackrr.com

These guys also have an assortment of other great diesels incl an SW1, 2 F7s and 4 FL9s (ex-Metro North). They also use two privately owned units: a C-424 (in Mass Central Colors) and a GP-9. Great stuff for a vintage diesel freak.. like me! 8)

Growing up with a grandfather who worked on the NYC for 50 years, it was easy to appreciate the locomotives from ALCO. From a steam perspective, the Niagara's were probaly the most beautiful design of the modern steam evolution. My grandfather stated the best running steamers were the class L-2 Mohawks. They pulled the best and maintained steady steam. From a diesel standpoint, I was subjected to the FA's at an early age, often riding in the cab during the late 1950's and early 1960's out of the Gardensville yard (prior to Frontier becoming the main yard). As a result of my first hand experiences, I have always said the FA's were the most beautifully designed diesel locomotive ever! I have come to appreciate many other roads that boasted this locomotive with excellent paint schemes. My favorite roads were the Lehigh Valley, Lehigh & New England, NYNH&H and Western Maryland.  :)

I have two favorite Alco steamers:

1. In shortline tradition, Bath & Hammondsport #11. She's a classy little Mogul still in existence! Right now, #11 is partially disassembled in the shop at the Middletown & New Jersey, pending disposition of an estate. The loco could run again if she receives an overhaul. The book Keuka Lake Memories has many great pictures of #11 switching and pulling trains, and I'd recommend it to any steam or shortline fan.

2. The might Berkshire- although associated with Lima and Baldwin, too, many 2-8-4s were built by Alco. This included 25 for Erie. In fact, this steamer turned alot of railroads like Erie from drag freight to fast haulers. It's a pity that no Erie Berks survive, but I believe that some of the survivors (from other roads) are Alco in origin.

Having said that, there are no bad Alco steam engines! IMHO, they only come in two categories: really, really good or just plain excellent. 'Nuff said.

Since MLW diesels are based on Alco designs, I have no problem including them here.  Pity about the wide cab- it spoils an otherwise great looking engine.

Light gray, not white (at least, when new; toward the end, it was closer to 'grung', as money for niceties like regular cleaning dried up)...

My favorite alco would either have to be the RSD-1 or the RS-1.  There is something about such a pioneering loco {RS-1} and its unique sister, the RSD-1, that brings me some sort of historic closure.  The flat hoods and arching cab roofs are something to be admired!

Well here goes-I love the PA (especially in MoPac colours) and the FA in Erie black and yellow(copied line for line by the Victorian Railways here in Australia).Pick any 6 axle century and you can't beat it for good looks and I am really fond of those RSD7/12/15 series of locos but they HAVE to have a high short hood. And not forgetting the littl'uns-the C415 was so homely that you can't help but care for 'em(did you know the original C415 demonstrator is preserved in Australia?). And no-one has mentioned the T6.

Thats enough for now!

Cool news on the C-415. Another C-415 is in the process of being renovated by local shortline Buffalo Southern, which strangely enough is a former Erie line. BSOR also connects to the New York & Lake Erie, which operates the southern portion of the same Erie line. NYLE rosters a pair of former VIA/CN FPA-4s in a very cool Erie-esque scheme that substitutes sapphire blue blue for black. For an impressive look at one of them, check this out: http://alcoworld.railfan.net/nyle.htm  -you won't be disappointed!  8)   Also appropriate for an ex-EL route, NYLE has a pair of C-425s including a high-nose ex-N&W unit that was used in Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

What can you tell us about that C-415? I know there weren't very many even constructed, and few of those survived, as I understand it. Believe it or not, as late as October 1996, the Ohio River Co (ORC).. in its Huntington, WV facility had a -415 shifting cuts of hoppers on a Saturday morning (used to have a photo of it :/ ). It was painted in a fairly bright yellowish-orangey-gold with black letters--wish I could remember the number! And ORC  had used at least an S-2 and RS-1 still in use in 1980, with some more stored.

But I have to agree with a previous post--RS-11's were and are my favorite, especially on N&W's line from Kenova, WV to Portsmouth, OH. I fondly remember a few.

My favorite Alco? I can only narrow it down to the S series switchers. Any of the ones who used to switch the Allied Chemical plant in Solvay, NY will do. I remember EVERY morning the school bus would have to wait a bit as they tied up the Bridge Street crossing doing there chores. I was always amazed how many cars one of these units could pull up the grade there. Lotsa smoke too! Well, not in this pic of #4 idling, sorry!

Hi All,

My favorite Alcos would be the FA and PA. This is easily confirmed by the fact that I have several such engines in my HO stable. The FA is only B&O, but the PA's are PRR, B&O, NYC, SP, Santa Fe. I can remove the covers of all four of my PA's and replace them with other covers, of different road names. Most impressive is my lash up of four PRR PA-1's. They will pull a house away. They are all Athearn, by the way.

Growing up with PC I have to say that I have always loved C-636's with RS-2's and 3's a close second.

I have always thought RS-27's (DL-640) were very cool and DL-109/110's are interesting too.

C-855's were awesome, but I never saw one and from what I have read, they were a big maintenance headache.

All nice Alco's Henry. I too have never seen the C-855. Not even a picture until now. That locomotive looks like it means business! The following text and image are from:

http://www.worldrailfans.org/Articles/US/DoubleDiesels.shtml

" Compared to the DD35 and U50, the C855 is a very "busy" looking loco with a design that looks as if it was cobbled together, and they had a distinctive fish-belly tank between the trucks. In comparison, the DD35 and U50 both show fairly clean, purposeful lines. The ALCO 251 prime movers in the C855's smoked in a typical ALCO fashion, and photos frequently show them under a large plume of black exhaust. In a letter from Rory O'Connor (an ex-UP employee who worked at North Platte), he stated that the C855s were superb locos on drag freights, but that it was their mechanical reliability and the pollution they caused (when America was getting very conscious of emissions) that was their eventual downfall.

I guess I'm pretty conventioanl - I'll take a PA. Preferably in a PA-PB-PA set in Santa Fe red and silver warbonnet, but Eagle colors ain't bad, and neither is the D&H idea of a warbonnet. Suspect they'd have looked real nice in Southern Green and white and gold.

RSD-15s are close behind, and that Austin & Texas Central Black Widow works very well indeed on that particular engine - but my heart is still given to the Santa Fe

It has to be the big, bad and beautiful PA. Equally usefull on passenger or freight.
Here is a shot from 1951 with my father in the cab, he worked as a field engineer for ALCo from 1946 to  1948 before hiring on with the Lehigh Valley.

Another one of my favorites, D-L M636 #3643. Here's a pic, and if you click on it, you can also see a video. ;)

All the old timers love the Alco PA's- which seemed to get the title of "HONORARY STEAM ENGINE" I however think the FA freight cabs are the best looking diesel ever.

Here is a Pennsy FA-2/AF-16 rounding the curve westbound at Torrance,PA in the late 1950's.

I would have to say my favorite would be an RS-36.  They might not have been very popular, but they definitely have a nice look to them.

A late-comer here, but...

How can you not take them all?  ;D

That said, my only big time mainline Alco railroading was on Cp and Cn out Montreal back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the big MLWs have a place in my heart, especially in the handsome full 'Action Red' scheme with the Multimark.

But grew up with D&H Rs11s, Rs36s, C420s and C424, so I like those, too.

Can't go wrong with an S-series switcher, either. Hmmm.

I give up! I like 'em all!

Come to think of it, I really like the C430... ;D ;D

Terry Kirkland liked ALCOs when he found them. Here is a Texas Central S-2.

I have to say that I have 3 favorite ALCo/MLW engines:

1- M-630 & C630M units for CN
2-RS23 roadswitchers in CP maroon & grey script lettering
3-RSC24 light roadswitcher for CN

The 3' gauge ALCO/MLW/BBD DL535E of 1981.

This is the most modern 3' gauge diesel/electric in the entire USA, and I'm building one in 25% size.

My favourite ALCo is the DL535S, who ran on some lines of Spain in 1668 mm gauge, but today some units are in a mine railway on 1000 mm. I like also RS-3 and the units powered by ALCo 251 engine.

Any Alco that still runs and is in its original livery (OK, it can be repainted if faded).

Rochester & Genesee Valley RR Mus. has one fav.:  RS-3m LV 211.  Everytime I see pics of it in the Morning Sun Books, when it was Pennsy 8445, I pause on it.  I like the grime and dust on it.

High-nose C-628 built for N&W is another.

On page 53, in Trackside with "Mr. Alco", three RSD-5s, in weathered black widow paint (SP), in a row.  I like that one.  (btw....   if you like Alcos, you want to get this book!  It's by Jim Odell & Len Kilian. Morning Sun Books.)

I've seen a high-nose RSD in B&LE paint, but I think it was in another book.  God, I wish we had more Alcos!!!

I like the c-420's especially the Lehigh Valley units- I photographed and saw one run, #405 at Steamtown this morning. Sounds really good. Of course the D-L is ALCO (diesel) heaven!

1. PA/PB
2. FA/FB
3. RS32 (DL721)
4. RS2
All in NYC paint. But then again...
...didn't Alco also make some Steam engines h-m-m-m. how about a Hudson, Mohawk, or Niagra, All "THOROUGHBREDS"

I found an old posting of mine from 2005 and it still stands--my favorite would still be the N&W RS-11's. Never had the chance to get "up close and personal" but there was one encounter I'll never forget. Three of these RS-11's were sandwiched between a pair of GP-9's in N&W's Kenova, WV yards one day in 1977. The engineer opened the throttle and three turbo-songs nearly pierced my eardrums, and three HUGE plumes of smoke went a good ways into the air. Man, I've wished I had owned a good camera (well, any kind of camera) and/or a tape recorder for times like those.

Other "faves" would be N&W C-630 #1130 (I think), working the Portsmouth, Ohio yards in early 1980; as mentioned, the Alcos from the Ohio River Company working the rail-to-river facility in Huntington, WV (C415, S-2, and an abandoned (?) RS-1). Since then, I've had the chance to ride behind an Alco S-1, part of the Abilene & Smokey Valley's ex-Rock Island line in Abilene, KS.

Honorable mention would be the former CN FPA-4 (okay, it's an MLW unit) on the Monticello and Sangamon Valley line in Monticello, IL. I understand they've added more motive power since I was there in 2008--time for another journey, I say!

As a follow-up, here are links to a couple of pictures I took back in March 1979. I _think_ the date was March 10 but who knows after 30-plus years. Anyway, these are scanned and "color-corrected" thanks to my new Epson scanner. The original prints had faded--the dye was turning pink!--so this is about as good as I could get with the photos. They were also from a "110" series camera, which were great for fitting in a shirt pocket and making "grab" shots, but the quality doesn't come close to those from SLR cameras then and digitals these days. Still, I'm glad to have the pix and I hope you like them too.

N&W's 2570 was apparently ex-NKP 570. This one still had the yellow/gold "N&W" block lettering. I don't think it had dynamic brakes, as there were only three openings, as compared to built-for N&W units, which mostly had five. 2570 was the last of the 3-4 units on this train, westbound in Ironton, Ohio, that afternoon/evening. It was getting dark, already, but I wasn't going to miss out on ever-decreasing Alco units!

The links are below--I tried to use the "re-size" feature but threw in the towel after a number of tries. Again, I hope  you enjoy these.

G'day again,
Got a shot of the cab of 48 class unit 139.
By 2004, technology was starting to crowd the confined cab of the 48 class.
But, they still had the Westinghouse B7EL brake valve.
Self lapping independent, manual lapping auto train brake.
And, no dynamic brake.
Some of the 48 class were chop nosed becoming the PL class.
Steve.
