Penn, and everbody else who may be interested.  Here's a link to "The Bessmer Board". http://members3.boardhost.com/Bessemer/
We've heard coal wont be back until 2010. Ashtabula has taken a lot of business. I'm not sure with what's going on a Duquesne Warf now.

Can anyone give a brief rundown of where the online businesses are located on the B&LE?

Thanks in advance,

Also, with that Steel Mill mentioned and NO offense to any one. What about that sayin "All the Manufacturing in America is now overseas" Hmm??

Over six years since the last post and a lot has changed on the Canadian National's Bessemer Sub.

All but a few of the classic orange and black B&LE locomotives have left the system, some painted into CN colors and many working on other parts of the CN system. The tunnel motors are all of the property except the 905. The 862,867,868 remain in service working the P&C Dock.

Many of the tunnel motors are now found roaming the CN system, some got the CN dip. The 866,878 are now working still in orange and black for CN in Chicago Land.

ex Illinois Central SD70's are now the main line power with an CN SD40-2W and a CN SD60 round out the mix.

The last days held on a lot longer then anybody would have thought, it took till the spring of 2015 for the major change to motive power to come along.

Good news, coal is again moving north on the sub.

The new normal on the Bessemer Sub.

Illinois Central SD70's make up the majority of the road power.

Here a trio bring an ore train south past an all but forgotten coal loader in Forestivlle, PA.

In all the years I lived close to the B&LE I only ever saw one train, a light engine move at Osgood with 3 tunnel motors. It's truly sad to see what used to be the heaviest tonnage mainline in the country relegated to cobbled together foreign power arrangements and just a few trains a day. I finally bought the Morning Sun book on the B&LE a few weeks back and have been pouring over it, remembering my ghost railfanning trips from years gone by of what used to be.

While it's sad to see so much of it gone, at least there's enough traffic to stave off abandonment. Great shot of the IC power.

I don't see much B&LE discussion under "Fallen Flags," so here are a few of my photos.
From a May 1975 vacation with a friend, a B&LE job in the vicinity of Butler.  Engine 454 was shoving, with the caboose leading the train - like I see CSX doing these days with locals around my home.  Brakeman was probably closing the switch.

I chased after the Reading 2102 from Kent, OH to Greenville, PA on a Sunday, May 1, 1977.  B&LE let railfans wander the property - no hard hats or release required.  On the engine sidings outside the roundhouse were several SD's including 452 and 856.

Inside the Greenville roundhouse on May 1, 1977 was DM&IR 504.

The view from the west side of Conneaut harbor on July 15, 1978, you could see the engine house with some yellow P&CD F units and B&LE SD's.  Too far away to make out road numbers.

Made the trip to Pittsburgh between April 7 and April 11, managed to get some railfan pictures in.  It was a struggle dealing with a GPS that sent me in a loop a few times, plus dealing with traffic and potholes.  Just before I arrived, US 30 collapsed in East Pittsburgh, closing 3 of 4 highway lanes.  (Note the detour sign in photo.)  At East Pittsburgh, I sat below the Union RR trestle and managed to catch a southbound loaded coal with B&LE and a few CN hoppers.  On April 8 I caught up with an old friend, B&LE 643, in McKees Rocks.  Album on rrpicturearchives, with some other stuff not relevant to the B&LE:

After a stop at the Pittsburgh & Ohio Central, I drove up near the CSX main line.  Across the tracks, I spotted an old friend, looking good out in the open, exposed to the weather and all.
