I have a new favorite (again)! It's just a tanker but I really like it! I don't know why, there's just something about it. My wife likes it too...

Ah!  Those are the tankers that haul the filling for the Oreo cookies!

Those shots are real beauties.   The scenery is a rare treat.  The pics look a bit surreal, like a postcard or something.  I've had so so luck with images on a flatbed scanner.  Your best bet would be to try to spruce them up with Adobe Photoshop.  I haven't used my scanner in a while so maybe someone else more familiar can help you.  Again, nice pics, love the rock cuts!

Great pics vicguy

You can put the scanned files through a photo program like Adobe photoshop and adjust color, contrast and sharpen them up a bit. It doesn't have to be Adobe a lot of programs have those capabilities

If you want, I can see what I can do with one of the shots in Photoshop and repost it as an example for you.  I've been considering maybe doing a mini-series here showing step by step how to do some of the simple things I've learned so far, if there is interest in that.  (I don't have it mastered by any means!)  I would probably pick the shot of the train going through the cut.  It is a great shot!

Hey thanks for the compliments! I used to have family in Jasper, so every few years we would take a VIA train up there. It was always so exciting for us because we live on Vancouver Island and we're not used to mainline railfanning. That rock cut was a favorite spot of mine, it involved a pretty good hike to get there, but it was definetly worth it! One day while I was sitting there waiting for a train, a black bear appeared not too far from me, I think that was the fastest I ever ran
Two23: that would be great if you could touch up that picture, I have photoshop as well, but I just started scanning pics on Monday, and trying to figure stuff out as I go along. The camera I took those pictures with was a $25 Kodak model, so the pics arent the sharpest to begin with (I wish I had my digi cam back then!).
Thanks again guys, and I hope to learn alot!

Chris, #2 gets my vote for 'best of'. Scenery not to be found just anywhere and the subject matter superb. Keep 'em coming

Vic--

Here's what I came up with after about 2 minutes of fiddling.  It is oversharpened a bit but even that could be fixed if I went back.  I cropped just a little, off the top.  Gray featureless skies generally detract from an image and dilute the impact of the main subject, IMO.

hey Kent, thanks that looks great! I guess it just takes time to play around with the pictures to see what works and what dosent. This is a great part of the hobby, now I just need some trains around to me to take pictures of!  Time for a road trip
